I'm from the UK where American biscuits are basically English scones. Now I can't imagine, (for the life of me!) that scones & thick gravy could taste nice.

Please explain? I can't get my head round it!

there is no way to make you understand the magic of biscuits and gravy. you will have to try them for yourself.

Mother Bear

BUTTERMILK BISQUITS
2 cups flour
1tbs baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 450° F. In large bowl, combine the flour, sugar and baking soda. Using a pastry blender or a fork cut the shortening into the flour until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add the buttermilk and stir with a fork just until the dough pulls together. I like mine to be a bit sticky .

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Dip your hands in flour and bring the dough together and pat until all is 1/2-inch thick. Using a glass or biscuit cutter dipped in flour, cut into 2-1/2 inch rounds. Bring remaining dough together and continue. dip in melted butter and Place biscuits on a baking sheet. (For biscuits with soft edges, place touching. For biscuits with crispier edges, place slightly apart.) Bake for 12 minutes or until golden.

HOME MADE SAUSAGE GRAVY
1 pound country sausage -bulk
(dont know if you have such a thing so basicly its ground pork with sage ,thyme salt and pepper.garlic powder worked into it.)
fry sausage in a skillet untill done, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.
if its really fatty drain off most of the grease.
add 3 tbs reg. flour and mix together with a whisk.
now with high heat under your pan add milk and stir untill you reach the desired consistancy ,turn off the heat .I like mine to be thick but remember that it will thicken as it cools so adjust it for that so you dont have a gelatin like mass on your bisquits.
this is the time to taste and add your prefered flavor ,maybe some salt and pepper. or in my case i like a small pinch of cayenne (very small.)and maybe some more thyme.
now split open the bisquits ,lay on a plate and cover with gravy,Usually 2 bisquits per adult serving. sometimes we eat them plain other times we dress em up with fried eggs and taters on the side .
Its all good.

Bisquits and Gravy mmmmm
they are are on my last meal list.
you know ! if it were your last meal what would you have?
I hope you try them .
peace><>

I don't think biscuits and scones are the same, so maybe this is where you're getting confused. A biscuit is flaky, but not hard like a scone. I just made biscuits and gravy on Sunday for breakfast. What I do is take a pound of bulk sausage and brown it. I do not drain the fat because you need it for flavor. I add some flour (I eye the amount) and stir. Then I add milk.. just enough to cover the sausage/flour mixture and slowly bring it to a boil to thicken. I season with salt and pepper. Once it's the right thickeness, or thinner if you prefer, you spoon it over the biscuits. I make my biscuits from Bisquick, a flour like baking mix here in the US. Check out their website for recipes. If you don't have Bisquick in the UK, you can make the biscuits from scratch, but make sure they are biscuits and not scones. You can also buy the refrigerated biscuits that come in a can, but I'm not sure if you can get them in the UK.

Scones are sweet, biscuits aren't sweet. I can't imagine putting gravy on a scone!

I'm American and live in Texas, where biscuits and gravy are almost a requirment and just about every restaurant has them on the breakfast menu, but I'd much rather have a scone than biscuits and gravy. Think I'll get kicked out of Texas for thinking that? :)

Like the first guy said, if they are made well, it's like butter in your mouth and so comforting. Scones and bisuits are nothing alike and I can definitely see you being put off if that was your idea but there is also something called red eye gravy that's much different than sausage gravy and I thinks it's horrible.

They're very tasty indeed if prepared correctly. Are they good for you? That's open for debate. I don't think it would be particularly healthy to eat them every day, but sometimes they can be just the thing for a treat. Biscuits and gravy make a nice breakfast treat.

If they are made right, hells yeah!! It must be buttermilk biscuits (crispy on outside, moist on inside) and sausage gravy (thick, white, with chunks of sausage). Very delicious, but it will clog up the arteries.
