The great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rig Veda. It is called the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, the Great Death-Conquering mantra. It is a mantra that has many names and forms. It is called the Rudra mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva; the Tryambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva's three eyes; and its is sometimes known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because it is a component of the "life-restoring" practice given to the primordial sage Shukra after he had completed an exhausting period of austerity. The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Veda. Along with the Gayatri mantra it holds the highest place among the many mantras used for contemplation and meditation.
The Maha Mrityunjay is a mantra that is said to rejuvenate, bestow health, wealth, a long life, peace, propsperity and contentment. The Mantra is a centuries old technique of connecting one to pure consciousness and bliss.
The prayer is addressed to LORD SHIVA. By chanting this Mantra, Divine vibrations are generated which ward off all the negative and evil forces and create a powerful protective shield. And it is said to protect the one who chants against accidents and misfortunes of every kind. It is a vibration that pulsates through every cell, every molecule of our body and tears away the veil of ignorance. It ignites a fire within us that consumes all our negativity and purifies our entire system. It is also said to have a powerful healing of diseases declared uncurable even by the doctors. It is a Mantra to conquer death and connects us to our own inner divinity.
Known as the Moksha Mantra of Lord Shiva, Maha Mrityunjay evokes the Shiva within and removes the fear of death, liberating one from the cycle of death and rebirth.

Shiva the benevolent, is the Supreme being beyond everything beyond death, beyond life, beyond being and beyond nonexistence...
An absolute from which emanates all and in which all merge, What has death to do with it? The one who created death itself!
Abound is Thee and abound is thee's love for you and me, and it is thee who shows us the path clouded and shrouded by the dust of our journey through lives and our imaginations...
Hence its Shiva who tells us the secret of Death that there is No death at all !
The one who has conquered death is mrityunjaya and the one who has conquered death and the secret about death's non existance is Maha-Mrityunjaya!
On a rituluastic /mantric plain the Maha-Mrityunjay mantra is very potent and the vibrations it creates when spoken benefit the mind and the body and also the surroundings making it cleaner and purer and bestowing health on the individual hence longevity.
This becomes more effective when done with proper nyasa, digbandhan, sankalp, and regular Japa.
Thanks

Mrityunjaya mean 'conquerer of death'. during the amrit manthan, poison also came out. Lord Shiva drank the poison, but kept it till his throat. this why he's called mrityunjay also.
