okay now i don't mean a shrugs his shoulders in a oh well way or i don't know way. but only when i say hey look at me and it's not just once he shrugs them like 3,4, or 5 times like it's a nervous tick or something, i'm not concerned about it, infact in a way i think it's hilarious, because he does it every time. and even when i'm trying to be serious i can't help but bust out laughing. the main thing i want to know is, is it normal and if so what quirky things have you seen out of your children?

Your son's got you figured out. He doesn't want you to be serious and he's learned that you start to laugh if he shrugs his shoulders. It is funny!

My son, when he was about 3, used to raise one eyebrow at me when I was trying to talk to him... used to crack me up. He's all grown up now and whenever I try to give him some motherly advice he still does it. Still cracks me up.

Three-year-olds are great mimickers. Your child has probably seen older children/adults shrug their shoulders, and is emulating what he has observed.

Young children will also repeat curse words they have heard.

Parents often are amused by this behavior. Laughing once at inappropriate behavior is acceptable; but, the child will continue this if the parent doesn't address the situation.

It could be Tourette's Syndrome. It's not always cuss words, contrary to popular opinion. Kids can develop tics like a shrug or head nod. Sometimes it is in response to anxiety.

Kids do stuff. It's not particularly quirky or unusual. If your son has a tic (not tick), then his shoulders would shrug at times when you don't say anything to him.

He is doing it because you laugh at it. Kids are like that, I have three and all do silly things like that. My youngest (4 and a half years) is fond of saying "OK Mom" in a exasperated/bored tone she learned from her thirteen year old sister. It's just how they learn. He thinks it's funny how you react to him. Don't sweat it, the "tics" change all the time as they grow!

I wouldn't worry about it unless it seems that its out of his control. That may be a little difficult to detect, though, because it seems like you're giving him positive reinforcement---your behavior is encouraging the behavior.

If it seems that he can't help it, you should definitely have it checked out.

(kids will continue a behavior when they can get a reaction.)

Maybe he is doing it because he gets a reaction from you with the laughing.

A lot of kids have different quirks at different times during development. He will probably stop when he notices none of his friends do it!

My son does this. I used to freak out but realized he was just doing it. Just keep an eye on it but it seems like it's nothing.

my son would strech his neck, he did this for 5-6months. it was one of those things boys do, but his mom was trippin! she wanted to have him checked for terets and wanted to take him to see all kinds of dr's, then one day he just stopped and hasnt done it again, but im sure he will if he needs 100% of his moms attention. i didnt give it the recognition that he was looking for in this way.
