I have an extremely hard time making small talk. I'm the kind that shoots straight for personal or heavy.
Is it true that I'm doomed unless I can make a girl laugh right off the bat?
I like bookish poetic girls but again small talk is not my strength. If I attempt small talk it's usually from left field.

You're not doomed at all. I don't know where you live but there are plenty of places where girls love the brooding artistic type. Try to find someone that has similar interests. If you're discussing the relevance of Henry the VI part II you don't need to make them laugh. Artistic girls like guys who can share their passion more than comedians.

Hey, I bet you can do much better than you give yourself credit for. You may not be into reading books, but do go to the book store and get this little pocket book. It's small, and it has Trivia questions to ask. Questions like....
If you were sick and feeling miserable, would you rather be by yourself or have your partner with you? Why?
If you inherited $100,000.00----how would you spend it?
You can always take the little Trivia Questions pocket book with you and pull it out to get a conversation started. Soon you won't even need it.
Stock up on games, Trivia Board Games, Card games, Scrabble and Checkers. Playing games is a great "Icebreaker." People will open up and make small-talk while playing Bingo or whatever. And there's no nervous pressure to talk non-stop while playing a game.
While you're at the book store, maybe you might get a Joke Book too, or go online to peruse some really funny jokes.

I dred small talk so I prefer to just talk to a new aquantance like they are an old friend. But to start a conversation I usually ask people what they're reading and where they would like to travel.
With some people it's ok to say something off the wall because it will get their attention and make them remember you.

Ask questions about a person, to get to know them better is not that hard. How can you get "personal" or "heavy" with someone that you do not know well?

just talk about stupid stuff .not so hard. like for example, your waiting for a class to start : " wow i cant belive he gave us so much homework right before the break" etc..
