I think that you should go for the third language. When I was younger, I had the same problem and I chose to learn another language before perfecting my Spanish and English. Now, I know Portuguese, French, English, Spanish, and sign language. It was the best decision of my life!

If you have an interest in a language, you should pursue it. Both German and Italian will help with your English, somewhat, since English is derived from both language families.

You didn't mention what your native language is. For instance if it's French, Italian would be easier for you to learn than German, since French and Italian both were derived from Latin.

I suggest you learn German. It's not too difficult, even though the grammar can be complex at times; but the rules of the German language don't have nearly as many exceptions as exist in English. I have spoken German for many years and I've always been happy I learned it. Also, languages open the culture and history of another society for you.

It depends on what your first language is really to know which of the two you would find easier. I found Italian very easy because I speak French - and German to me is a formula rather than a language and took me a lot longer to master - but you can never speak too many so good luck with whichever you choose!

My English improved a great deal when I took German. There was enough similarity that I didn't feel totally lost even though it was more difficult than English. If you are up for a challenge, Chinese is in demand in many fields.

I'd continue to strive for excellence in English. PoohBear suggests that English is "messed up", when in fact, if used properly, is likely the most succinct language.
