I went on holiday, first time in years and was pulled over by police, I was booked for driving unlicensed, my license had expired by five days, gasp! I simply forgot!

I never recived a reminder notice, I live in NSW, Australia
I have been driving for 25 yrs and not even a parking ticket,

I asked for some leniency regarding the $400 fine, RTA said no! It was my responsibility to renew it.

should I go to court to try to get the fine lessened? Has anyone else had this experience?

I do not have the money for the fine, the police said I would just get cautioned but that was not the case. who can I contact to get the correct information please,? no solicitors, not willing to pay

Pay the fine and apply for the renewal of your license. It is the only way.

You can make arrangements to pay the fine off a bit at a time- just apply at your local courthouse (clerks there should be able to help you). Unless you want to risk a record, plus a bigger fine/loss of licence/court costs, don't bother going to court- they will not accept your reason, and will be ticked off at you for thinking that they would. Good luck!

You can probably make arrangements to make payments on your fine, but it is unlikely they will reduce it. Renewing your license is your responsibility, and the "I forgot" excuse probably won't work. If you were in the hospital or otherwise incapable of renewing, you might have a chance.
