Your Catholic friends need to learn what the Catholic Church teaches. Following is copied and pasted from teh Catechism of the Catholic Church:
"Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.
We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives. "

There is no such thing in Judaism as going to hell, not like the Christians have it. We have reincarnation, not eternal burning in hellfire for the enjoyment of some sadistic god.
When we burn off our blemishes we have caused to our souls, it is extremely painful. We feel and see every single pain and injustice that we ever caused anyone, including ourselves. This is what is "hell" according to Judaism.
After feeling the pain we have caused, we are sorrowful beyond belief, and we make full tshuvah (turning from ever doing those thoughts, speech, and actions again), and with that comes forgiveness from God.
That's not all. After we go through this, we emerge with a much higher level of understanding, wisdom, and compassion than we had before, and we are ready to be born again into the world to bring this higher level of wisdom and understanding here for the benefit of mankind.
And so it goes, as we attain higher and higher levels each time of understanding, wisdom, compassion, etc.
Your friend, if he committed suicide, would have to meet the pain he caused himself and others, again -- ON TOP OF what he is already meeting right now. Does he really want that?
Right now what he is meeting in THIS life that is causing him so much pain is exactly what he created previously, and he needs to get through it, burn off those blemishes -- not stop in mid-process. This is the reason that he is going through this, and that is the goal.
He will come out the other side if he continues, stays strong, and works to understand each thing that he meets, where it could have come from as far as him causing those conditions that are now coming back to meet him.
Don't be angry, don't be upset, and don't blame others. Just stay strong, and get through it, and not only get through it, but get through it with understanding, compassion, and wisdom.
That is what I would tell your friend. Don't know if it would help, but there it is.
P.S. Also, if it helps any, the place where we burn off those blemishes we cause, the pain of which is described as "hell" by Judaism, this place is described in the Oral Torah, which is the main body of Torah. It says that the place has oceans, deserts, snow, rain, mountains, etc. Sound familiar?

No! Suicide is not the unpardonable sin. No where in the Bible is there such a thing as "mortal sins" etc., as the Lord has declared that sin is sin period and there are no variations as such. This is just another "concoction" of the catholic church. The unpardonable sin cannot be committed in this day and age as the circumstances simply don't exist any more. Jesus Himself said that all manner of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men except blasphemy against the Holy Ghost.

if you be live in hell then already you be live in the concept that this world was made by something that credited this world with meaning and the fact that some decides it is not for me is like throwing away the greatest gift of all there are many living things in the world from bugs to plants to birds and none are greater than human so many humans have died in this world from the begging of time and all of them before they died wanted to live just one more day what a gift to live and throw it away is throw in g away the biggest gift that exists in the world.but the truth is that you might go hell sorta but what is hell relay but almost every time when someone tries to commit suicide they have regrets the last second but then it is to late but if they regret it last second before they die it does not count as suicide unless it is by a bullet to the head.unlike a guy who jumps from the top of a building and on the way down he is thinking what have i done?

Yeah, religious people say if you commit suicide you go straight to hell ,for all eternity ( Especially Christians)
I'm catholic and they say something like that too, like a punishment for taking a shortcut in life..
I don't know about the mentally ill people,
sounds unfair but most likely they also go to hell

This is an opinion.
It depends.....
Killing yourself can be done for many reasons and in many ways.
A Martyr for the faith OK.
A truly insane person probably is only accountable up to the point that they became truly insane. To the extent that their sins may have contributed to their own slide into insanity they may still be held accountable for those sins.
A person who rejects Christ and his promise for eternal life and who also rejects God's gift of the present life is in deep deep trouble. This is the ultimate rejection of God.
A terminally ill Christian in great pain who takes a lethal injection with a prayer for forgiveness on their lips would be welcome in my heaven if it were up to me. And somehow I can't imagine God being less loving and forgiving than I am. Particularly after reading about how Jesus prayed for God to forgive those who crucified him. [Sorry if this offends the hard liners, but it is my opinion]

I feel that it is one of the most violent acts to commit, because you are actually taking your own life. But I feel that it can be forgiven. but first you must be punished. Not by going to hell, but more like in purgatory where you are disconnected from anyone you've ever loved. It wouldn't be a very happy place to be but you will be forgiven eventually if you are truly sorry for what you have done.

Death is preordained by ALLAH, the angels know at what stage to come and take your soul out from your throat, killing oneself whether one is sane or insane is immaterial to taking ones life, ALLAH has created us and he will raise us up alive after our death, this is the laws of the universe, so whoever despoils the laws and commands, an institution has been created known as hell where ALLAH will send the men and Jinns to pay for their iniquity and sins, it is always worthwhile to clearly read the Holy Quran by oneself, and then ALLAH will send you the guidance which is required.
There are many people in this world who do not beleive in Allah, even if you try to open their eyes, you cannot, so it is always better to be guided by the Author of the Quran who is our Beautiful Loving, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate, Most Forgiving Our Lord ALLAH.

I don't think so, especially in cases of mental instability.
But the Bible doesn't address this, so I don't know for sure. All I can do is assume.
