European colonization of American began before the Protestant reformation, and even afterward, Protestants were too busy establishing themselves in Europe, and the two main colonizers, Spain and Portugal, were still Catholic. So it was the only game in town. (Homegrown religion could get you re-educated, or killed.) But some of the old ways still survive in Latin America. Several of the saints bear strong resemblance to various Aztec, Mayan and Incan gods.
