The Church has referred to itself as the “Catholic Church” at least since 107 C.E. (about 10 years after the last book of the New Testament was written), when the Greek term "Katholikos" (meaning universal) appears in the Letter of St. Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrnaeans:
"Wherever the bishop appear, there let the multitude be; even as wherever Christ Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church."

We do not know how long they had been using the term "Catholic" before it was included in this letter.
All of this was long before the Council of Nicea and the Nicene Creed from 325 C.E. which states, "We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church."

My condolences as well on the loss of your father.
Was your father ill for a long period of time? Was hospice involved?
My life partner passed away October 6, 2006, and hospice was involved with pallative care for her, and they have a bereavement team which I have had the opportunity to summon when the grief became too great. I still miss her dearly, but their assistance has helped me to regain my good mood and my will to move forward. This sounds as if it would be something that could help your brother if it is available.
As far as your brother's desire to tell your family about his beliefs, right now is not the best time fresh out of the gate from your father passing and the holidays approaching, because this is the time of year that depression and suicide is the highest, and I may be stretching it here, but your brother may need some professional help as mentioned above me.
It's good that your mother is reading the bible every day. I hope she can take comfort in the passages she comes across.

The word Catholic was not used until 107 AD to describe the Church, all the CHurch dogma and doctrine are found in the Bible. One only has to go to Mass to see that every part of it is from the Bible and arranged by the Apostles in the Didache. No you will not find the word Catholic in the Bible, it was the name Christian gave to their Church to describe their universal union which they were all apart of.
As far as your brother goes don;t try to "prove him wrong". Just be patient, understanding and love him as the Church teaches, that right there will show him the true Christian light.
"The whole concern of doctrine and its teaching must be directed to the love that never ends. Whether something is proposed for belief, for hope, or for action, the of our Lord must always be made accessible, so that anyone can see that all the works of perfect Christian virtue spring from love and have no other objective that to arrive at love." ~ Prologue Catechism of the Catholic Church

My condolences to the recent loss in your family.
Might I go out on a limb and guess your brother is angry at God for said loss and is thus taking it out on His Church?
If this is the case, your brother is (inadvertantly) demonstrating his belief in the Catholic Church being the One True Church by targeting it, as opposed to the other denominations.
Otherwise, your brother has simply been smitten by Bible Fundimentalist (anti-Catholic) theogogy. . . not good.

He sounds angry and bitter. What sort of advice do you need? I'm kind of at a loss here. Looks like you are up against something really hopeless, leaving you feeling pretty helpless. In this section, the only advice I can give you is to pray. This may take a long while. Strip yourself of all worldliness, read up on the catechism so that you might be able to answer his questions better. If he's not wanting the answers, there is nothing that can be done about that. He has to let go of that bitterness and anger.

It sounds like he has an ax to grind. Perhaps he's hurt over the loss of your dad. You have to look at the religion as a whole and decide from there. Catholics are the first Christians and other Christian faiths broke off from there, creating the Protestant faiths.

Catholicism is very misunderstood by especially non-Catholic Christians. Even a lot of Catholics themselves don't know what the Church teaches and why.
Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church and it will explain everything.
. . . and yes, every doctrine of the Catholic Church was taught by Christ and/or His Apostles.

Bible-fundamentalism is ruining the original Christianity and that's a fact.

I think your brother needs to see a psychiatrist and be placed on medication. Seriously.

Tall poppy syndrome. Non-catholics are jealous of catholic numbers, but catholics really don't care. Your brother has been brainwashed, there is nothing you can do about it but say "don't mention religion just live like you are supposed to and that includes not annoying me"
