Easy!
The people!
And of course the system which makes the people incapable of seeing anything other than the black and white, good or bad, with us or against us, A or Not A world of the Aristocracy.
One nation of the people by the people and for the people but if the people can't arsed to get involved!
What can you do.
Cynical I know.

Lack of money is one problem. You need to be able to get the word out, and advertising is expensive.
In my state (Pennsylvania), the primaries are "closed"; this means that to vote in a Democratic primary, you have to be a registered Democrat. This also works against third parties; why register as a Green when you won't have any say in who makes it through the primaries?
There also is a perception that third parties will end up leading to messy and expensive runoff elections. That doesn't often happen, but the perception is a problem.

Personally I think that Ron Paul should run as a third party candidate. It would get more attention and bring him to the spot light. But for some reason he doesn't want to. He's really a Libertarian, which is not Republican.

it boils down to programming.
We are all so programmed that there are only 2 parties in which we can select make a choice from.
Personally I vote Liberal on anything I can but most people will only choose from the 2 parties so that they "don't waste a vote."

Unfortunately, it is not enough money, money, money.
The two existing parties garner so much money, that they can control the media, ergo, the perceptions of the voters are controlled. The Republican and Democratic candidates speak about their differences, but in reality, they are all in the same club.
