This is an excellent question.
One I had wondered myself. I like to use Paul's example to lead homosexuals to God. Paul had a stumbling stone, the Bible doesn't specify what, but this inclined Paul to become celibate. If your right eye makes you sin cast it out, if your left arm causes you to sin, cast it out.
Peter was married. God intended for men to marry. Priests can't get married due to political situations with the church in the twelfth century. Pope Innocentius established this as well as many other things in order to reassert the Papal power. check him out

A couple of people already gave one of the answers inheritance. Secondly think about the job in the middle ages mountains in Brazil, Blessing those dying on slave ships, burying the dead of plagues (not a family environment). In every religion there have been those that have take the "higher path" and made themselves "enuichs" for God.
The fact that a Priest cannot be married and serve is actually Canon Law not a dogma of faith. Being a law and not dogma it is changable and there of course are exceptions there are married Priests. About 100 in the US currently serving (ordained ministers that converted after marriage) and there are about 25,000 married non-serving Priests who are being considered to come back to service. Worldwide about 1/3 of ordained Priests still serving are married.
Ordination is a Sacrament once someone is ordained a Priest they never lose that, they are still Priests, it is just if they can serve as a Parish leader. But no matter what there will also always be a celibate Priesthood as well. Look at the Orthodox they have a choice to be married or monastic (celibate), many chose to be celibate. But being married you still take a vow of celibacy, meaning no sex outside the marital union and if your wife dies then you will not remarry and remain to the vow of celibacy.

Celibacy is consistent with Jesus, because of the fact scripture in no way tells us that He replace into married. The vow of celibacy is truthfully a marriage vow of the priest to the Bride of Christ - the Church. The Church is their better half. that's an quite holy union. Now, there are married clergymen. lots of them are married former protestant ministers that switched over to the Catholic Church and have been ordained into the priesthood mutually as being married. that's in many situations purely single adult males that would vow celibacy whilst ordained. The bible additionally speaks of each and every individuals having distinctive God-given presents and skills. some are sturdy instructors, others prophets, or ministers, leaders, etc., yet each and every individuals comes mutually to make up the completed physique of Christ. some have the presents for marriage and kinfolk, some do not. Our interest as stewards of those presents is to apply them to the extra suitable glory of God. God bless.

There was a pope, I think in the fourteenth or fifteenth century that decided priest could not get married for what ever reasons he had. First they could....then they couldn't. Go figure. I'm sure he had a very good reason....not. Did you know that the Polish National Catholic Church allows it's clergy to marry?

The catholic church allowed priests to marry at one time, but since felt that celibacy was an example of the life of Jesus Christ, the bible does say "better to marry than to burn with passion" I disagree with this teaching of celibacy for priests, they are human and have human needs. My pastor is married and has children so he can relate with families at our congregation.

hello cute! yes, peter was married. later on (wish i could tell you which one)......The Pope stated that the marriages of Priests had to be denied because when the Priest died, his wife got Church property and Church money. The Pope thought this move would eliminate that problem, which it did.

This is a good question. It goes against human nature not to marry all your life. It's not true that you would be distracted if you are married. In fact, you would be more distracted if you are a young bachelor priest with all these girls entering your church and maybe "confessing" to you in private. That's the reason why there are so many problems in churches: child rape, concubines etc.
