So if I buy this system: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5663210
Can the surround sound only be used when I watch DVDs? Or will I be able to use it when I just watch tv or play games too? Is there some kind of option that will let me change what the surround sound is coming from? Thanks

Surround sound like Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS originates at the source. Sources include DVDs, HD cable, HD satellite and certain games. Also, most surround systems have the ability to simulate surround sound from a stereo source.

Depending on your system, you may have the ability to simulate a jazz club or a concert hall. You might be able to use a variety of variations of DD 5.1 or DTS. And on the higher end systems you might see a large array of complex adjustments which are made available for the most discriminating ear and the tinkerers.

The unit you are considering seems to have the basics covered. Be sure to have a quick look at the surround parameters section of the owners manual to be sure you are utilizing the features to there best ability.

And finally, if it isn't everything you were hoping it would be when you get it set up, take it back. There are a lot of choices out there. I'm partial to Yamaha.

Unfortunately the online specs don't describe the available inputs/outputs.
To be able to use it with another source you will need at minimum a set of audio inputs and preferrably at least one digital audio input (s/pdif).
