because ... a smoker is a human and should have the right to light up if they chose too..we over emphasize that non smokers have rights..we chose to smoke just as you choose what car to buy...we should have that basic right...there should be smoking only restaurants...all the staff should smoke etc....that way noone is where they dont wanna be

As far as smoking in resturaunts I am personally not a fan of smoking while eating. When smoking was allowed in resturaunts (its not any more here in AZ) there were seperate sections to the resturaunt. So there is no harm to those in the non-smoking section.
As far as bars/clubs I think its rediculous that I cannot smoke in the pool hall I hang out in. or the bar that I choose to go to. If the non-smokers dont want to be around it then they can choose to go somewhere else. One of the big arguments here that caused people to vote for the no smoking law was that children are getting second hand smoke. Well what is a child doing in a bar or pool hall at 11pm or later anyways? shouldn't they be in bed? Smokers are being punished because of poor parenting which just is not right! It should be up to the owner of that bar to choose whether he wants to allow it or not. The no smoking in public establishments that has been passed here hurts bar and club owners the most. I mean I know that I would just as well prefer to have all my friends over at my house now drinking and smoking all we want then go out. I still get alcohol, get to play pool (I have a pool table), and get to smoke. So the only person it is really hurting is the owner who is not getting the business.

As a smoker, I really can't think of any. It may seem hypocritical, but I really don't like it when I'm trying to eat and the person at the table behind me is smoking--especially if they're just letting the cigarette burn without actually puffing on it. Makes my eyes sting.

I live in a city where smoking has been banned from ALL restaurants (except certain bars--it's left up to the owners of the bar) and honestly--it's kind of nice. I can wait an hour to have a smoke. :)

Okay, but keep in mind, I am a non-smoker.
Smoking in restaurants should be made legal. There are many reasons for this. But first, the way to make it so that it is a plus for everyone would be that the restaurants would have to have a separate room for smokers to dine in. A room that is completely away from the non-smokers room, not like how some places used to be where designated tables were smoking tables and some weren't. (that was stupid!) Like a restaurant could have one dining area that leads off the one side of the kitchen for the non-smokers, and another dining room that comes off the other side of the kitchen for smokers. And in restaurants that are unable to set up like such, they would have to modify the interior to accomodate a totally separate room for smokers. This would be a benefit for restaurants because it will encourage business. And increasing the business that the restaurants do, benefits everyone.

There. Thats all I could come up with.
Good luck.

Smoking is a nasty habit. I am a smoker and will leave an area if it becomes too smokey. That said, I liked the smoking section and the non smoking sections in the restaurants.

In Oregon, there is no smoking in restaurants. A lot of restaurants are putting in the poker machines. Since gambling is illegal for minors, you have to go through a doorway (there may or may not be a door affixed to the doorway) to get to that area. Often you will find smokers back there sitting and relaxing with friends sipping coffee and catching up with their friends.

Everyone needs a place to go. If there is a bunch of crying kids, that is also a good place to sit as they are not allowed in there.

Most bars allow smoking. Some have a smoking half and a non smoking half. Unfortunately for the non smoker, the smoke drifts their direction if the bar does not have good circulation. Usually, they do not have good air circulation.

One time I was in one that had those battery operated ashtrays on the table that sucked in smoke and filtered it somehow. Kind of strange but it was not really smoky in there even though there were plenty of smokers.

Bottom line? you will have to make your own decision but above is some food for thought for you.

For the simple reason that a smoker is a human being and has the right and ability to choose for themselves when and where they smoke. No one has the right to tell someone else what they can and can not do with their bodies. I could argue that I am against drinking. People will say that someone who drinks does not affect them but that is incorrect. There are more deaths each year by drunk drivers than there are by secondhand smoke. I could also argue that I find obese people disgusting ( I don't just using an example) People will argue that this doesn't affect them. Again incorrect. There are more medical problems each year caused by obesity than from secon hand smoke. This means that everyones insurance premiums will go up each year to cover the costs of taking care of these people. I don't have a right to tell people they can not drink or eat even though both could affect me. There fore they should not be granted the right to tell me that I can not smoke because it could affect them. Someone can always find fault in what someone else does. Are we to allow one group more rights than another?

I`m a smoker and i don`t think it should be allowed in restaraunts, breathing smoke in whilst food is around it not right.
As for pubs/cafe`s etc i think in the UK we should have followed Spain`s example and let an establishment choose wether they wanted to be smoking or non-smoking. The owners and thepublic then have a choice...

It shouldn't be - I don't like it around me when I eat.
In bars it's different because many smoke more when they drink- Even some non smokers smoke when they drink so the only reason I can think of is that it may hurt sales at the bar.

I can't say one way or the other. I think it should be left up to the owner. If smoking is allowed at the particular restaurant, then for any non-smokers, eating there is optional. No one is forcing them to go there.
Same for bars. And with bars, you generally aren't going to them to get healthier.
I'm a non-smoker by the way.

Simply that we live in a free country should be reason enough. I am a smoker, and I don't particularly care for smoked filled rooms, but if it bothers me, I leave.

Besides all the health risks I can't handle the smoke, it makes my nose run and my eyes water. My chest hurts almost immediately when I am in the presence of cigarette smoke. I don't feel there are any reasons why it should be legal. I do sympathize with your addiction but that is something you initially chose, not me!
