My reason is that when i drink rum (and i am using a mixer ) i like a good rum that has an actual rum taste (cruzan ).
I find the sweetness from the rum and then the sweetness from the pop is too much but putting diet soda in it lets you still taste the sweetness from the rum without it getting sickly.

i am sure there other reasons but that is mine

They:

1. Don't know alcohol has calories.
2. Don't want the carbs from the soda.
3. Like the taste and don't care.

It's a mental thing, like buying diet soda and a bag of chocolate. They want to believe they cancel each other out.

I asked this question once of one of my good customers who always got a rum and diet coke. I asked why. He said he never liked coke, he loved diet coke though. So it's not a saving calorie thing, it's just a taste preference.
