It says "sword" on the right wrist and "shield" on the left. what is the significance of that?

It sounds like it simply means the right hand is the sword hand, so the left one holds the shield. It sounds like it's basically a fancy way of saying you're right handed.

why don't you ask the person that has the tattoo?

Most people are right handed

The right hand would be the sword hand

The left hand would be the shield hand.

peter should be careful, it is correct that the weapon was to be held in the right hand and the shield with the left. it was a religious belief, christian i believe. my father is somehow still left handed after growing up in england 50 years ago, even with the nuns and teachers beating his hands when they found him writing with his left hand.
