Diplomats are appointed by the President or Prime Minister. Thus, their position is co-terminus with the tenure of the head of state unless they are re-appointed by the next winner in the election.

Not Australian diplomatic staff they are foreign office civil servants. Australian ambassadors and equivalent are career diplomats and they are not political appointments.
