So here's the deal... My husband and I purchased a car (Car #1) from a dealer and were paying it off... Then my husband purchased a 2nd car from the same dealer.... I finished paying off Car #1 and went to retrieve the pink slip, however, the dealer said he wouldn't give me the pink slip because my husband was 3 months behind on the payments for the Car #2... So my husband returned the Car #2 (after having made a year of payments on it) to the dealer, and again, I went to claim the pink slip... Now the dealer says that he won't give me the pink slip until my husband pays him the 3 months of payment he was behind on for the Car #2 (the car that was returned)

Is this legal? Is this even fair? What should I do? Help!!!

The deals should not have been tied together. They were wrong to not surrender ownership papers for #1 when it was paid off. It was illegal to do so, even if he was behind on #2. They need to be reported for illegal practices.

Sounds like you guys are dealing with a "buy here pay here" dealer. I have no idea whether it's legal. They have their own way of doing things.

It would certainly not be legal for a bank to do that, but you're dealing more with something like the mafia than the bank.

In the future, live on less money than you make. It's all so much easier when you do that. You can just walk into a bank like a civilized person and you don't have to deal with these nuts.

Talk to your Better Business Bureau. Maybe they'll be able to get the guy to do what's right. That's the problem with financing with a used car lot. Most are shady at best and outright crooks at worst.

Sounds Illegal to me. call the Department of Motor Vehicles and complain of the poor business practices of this dealer. You signed a contract and you did your part now he must fulfill his part . The other loan is a total separate contract.
