i agree with you, it's similar to words like wench and tart, they sound horrible, even though the meaning isn't a bad thing!
here in Australia, most people call their mixed breed dogs a 'Bitsa' and most 'bitsa's' are wonderful dogs!
i don't mind calling dogs 'mixed breed's', but personally, i do still like 'bitsa' better!

Personally, I don't find mutt offensive at all. To me, it means exactly the same as "mixed breed". Mutt = mixed breed. I would never use mutt in a negative way, therefore to me, it is no different than any other word used to describe a mixed breed dog.

The word mutt comes from muttonhead, a pejorative term meaning "a stupid person" based on the notion that sheep are stupid. Mutt in its first recorded use in 1901 is used in the same senses as muttonhead, but it is soon recorded (1904) as a term of contempt for a horse and then (1906) for a dog.
The term "mutt" generally refers to a dog of unknown descent.
A mixed-breed dog (also called a mutt, crossbreed, mongrel, a bitsa, tyke, cur, or random-bred dog) is a dog that has characteristics of more than two breeds, or is a descendant of feral or pariah dog populations.
To me, it is not any disrespectful than calling it a dog, or a b itch. It's not the words we use it's our intentions behind using it.

What ever happened to "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."?
I just bought a "mutt" or a "mixed breed" or whatever you want to call it and I love him because he's my dog. A dog is a dog is a dog...no matter what title you place on them. Just like a person is a person. When people from different races intermix and have children, the children aren't any less of a person, just as a dog from different backgrounds isn't any less of a dog.
Grow up people, stop being ignorant soap-box fools. Dogs are dogs, cats are cats, people are people, no matter who their parents are.
And to answer the question, I don't have a problem with the word "mutt." I'm a mutt myself. German-English-Polish-Cherokee-Portuguese-Jewish. :)

I don't know if you have investigated what the word "mutt" means, but it refers to "mixed breed" and other words related to this word are crossbreed, mongrel, bitsa and Heinz 57.
It is not disrespectful, I actually find mongrel to be more offensive than mutt - but I guess it relates to how the individual feels about the word in general.
Really, mutt or mongrel - its not disrespectful - the dog has two or more breeds in it, and this is the word used to describe that.. It doesn't matter where you look, all the definitions state the same meaning.

I don't get the need to be "politically correct" with everything....I don't think "mutt" is disrespectful unless you use it with disrespect.
"I love my cute little mutt".....not disrespectful.
"Excuse me for stepping on your sloppy little mixed breed rat, I must have mistaken it for a dishrag".....disrespectful.
It's like the word "handicapped".....years ago the word "invalid" was dropped from usage in favor of "handicapped" because it was considered disrespectful. Then "handicapped" became disrespectful. Now "disabled" is becoming inappropriate to use, in favor of "special needs" or "physically challenged." What happens when those terms become inappropriate to use??
What are we going to use when "mixed breed" gets a negative connotation? The dog doesn't care what you call it. I lovingly refer to my male as "d*ckface" from time to time (that's right, I said duckface...and any number of assorted vulgarities I won't try to censor).....I say it with a smile on my face and I love this dog more than I love some people. He doesn't care.
It's all a matter of use and perception. I for one wish we'd stop being so PC about everything, and for crying out loud let's not subject our dogs to it.

Grew up with them called mutts, It was not spelled or whispered like a bad word around me. Own a mutt and have had several in the past. So I'll be sticking to mutt along with mixed breed from time to time. You do know it's one and the same? But don't breed them we have enough DOGS without homes already. ......ALL KINDS.
s/n is best thing to do!!

I have a pure bred doberman, but i use the term mutt for her in an affectionate way when she is being typically stupid, eg 'idiotic mutt' said with a smile. 'Mutt', is just a term to describe a mixed breed dog, b*tch is used commonly as a derogatory word these days, but its still a female dog.

NO WAY! I love the word "mutt." The greatest dog I ever owned was a mutt. "Mutt" is a term of endearment.
"Mix" or "Mixed breed" is the proper term. Use it if ya like, but I'll stick with my good ol' mutts!
If you want disrespectful, try calling an Aussie a mongrel sometime. Ya better be smilin'! :-)

It doesn't bother me. I call my pure bred bulldog my little mutt sometimes! It's just a silly name and thats how I look at it! Be proud of your mutt dog! Just say it different...you can totally change the meaning in your head! Good luck!
