You know, that's a hard thing. I'm sure Private Ryan depicted what used to happen but the war is so different for us depending on where you serve out here. This is my third time in this region and second time during OIF. I really can't say that I've seen a movie that depicted anything current. And I have not seen no love stories out here and one guy saving Iraq by himself. If you watch Transformers and see the desert in Qatar, it's nothing like what they made it out to be. I just took a trip to Qatar and it's one of the most modern countries in the area.
Thank you for your appreciation. It's an honor to serve.

I havent seen one movie yet that depicted the real thing. There have been some great movies that give you an idea, but until you actually experience it, you will never know. The movies I recommend are Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Home of the Brave, and The Kingdom. Each one shows the brutality and motivation of various enemies on various battlefields.

My grandpa wouldn't watch Saving Private Ryan. He was in Normandy, Bastogne in the battle of the Bulge, and in Germany.

Didn't want to see any of that again.

He did get to be in a movie with Humphrey Bogart called Sahara. It was a war movie.

To tell you the truth, the preview for Saving Private Ryan made me cry a little. It brought back memories.
I never fought hand to hand or fired my personal issued weapon at a human being, we did blow up tanks in Desert Storm. It didn't seem real at the time. Far distance, so I never actually saw anyone when firing at a tank.

Unless there was someone up on the theater stage actually shooting into the audience, killing the people around you....

No movie, no movie at all. And anyway, most vets I know avoid war movies

Rambo, nothing to do with the macho shooting, commando thing. To do with vets who come home to a stranger place (the USA), than they left behind in combat. That adjustment period, where you drift from one dead end job to another, trying to get help from Uncle Sugar (as promised), and get the paperwork runaround telling you "too bad, so sad, we can't help you; don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out, bye." When Uncle Sam called, I answered, when I called Uncle Sam he put me hold.

Well it depends on which war you are talking about.
"We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson is a great movie.
"Home of the Brave" with Samuel L Jackson
"Letters from Iwo Jima"
And the best thing you can see about WWII is Band of Brothers. It was a tv series on HBO but it is out on DVD now. Its about $80 but well worth it. I watch it a lot.
Thank you for your support

A Bridge too Far comes to mind.

To be honest, no movies are at all a realistic depiction of the actual thing. The fear that holds you when you are standing on the field with a gun in your hand. Your friends and fellow comrades dying all around you. The horrible conditions that you have to endure in order to get to the main battle. The conditions get worse once you are in the thick of it all. I fought in Vietnam, was wounded, and sent back to America.

my husband loves black hawk down. his uncle was one of the soldiers that was a part of that operation/mission. so its very real to him.

it really depends on what your job is though. i mean...my husband works with computers so really all he sees when he deploys are..well..computers. my brother on the other hand is a combat medic. so his experiance is much different than my husbands.

band of brothers is almost too real for both of them to watch though.
