In Christianity, Jesus says 'ask and you shall receive' - but what if God's will is different to nearly everything you ask for... Could this make you lose faith in God?

Great question- when I first became a Christian , I began to take this verse to mean that WHATEVER I WANTED GOD WOULD GIVE ME- and if I continued to believe that I could have lost faith. Also I was told that if I had more faith than God would answer my long time prayer- which was to heal me from a chronic disease that causes pain 24/7- When we ask something in Jesus' name that does not mean that we can ask anything- God's will is always associated with the name of Jesus. I have had this disease for all but 11 of my almost 50 years. However instead of losing faith, I have gained faith, because I have learned to trust God in the process of the pain- and I received God's will- His grace and strength to sustain me- it is very hard at times being a musician in constant pain- however I can tell you that I have experienced God more in my struggle then if He had healed me. I know that one day He will- either before I die, or for eternity once I see Him face to face- my faith is tested with other issues in my life that I wish were not there either- however I will never lose faith, because my God's mercy and faithfulness is new every morning.

This is the will of the Living God, that any person who believes that Jesus Christ is sent from Him and take His Name shall have everlasting Life.

Like a Child when their Parents say No to their request, they will bratt about it but later accept it as they have no choice. Then they realise why their request was rejected and see it was good for them. Thus having knowledge and wisdom. Their Faith GREW in their Parents and keep on thanking them. It is the same for God Children.

That depends on the strength of your faith in God. Jesus did not mean if you asked for, say, a toy, you would receive it. He meant if you asked for love, protection, help, etc., God would grant it to you in some way that you may not be able to recognize. Other than that, if u so desired something materialistic like an ipod, God would grant it to you only if you deserve it.

and as for God's will, no one, save for God Himself and Jesus, can comprehend it.

The Scriptures tell us that in part “[God’s] will is that all sorts of men should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth.” (1 Timothy 2:4) Jesus Christ and the early Christians worked whole-souled to bring this accurate knowledge to others.—Matthew 9:35; Acts 5:42; Philippians 2:19, 22.

Mindful, God PROMISED to meet all our NEEDS, but our WANTS are a different thing!

God's will is very simple, but not always easy. The whole of God's will is doing just two things. 1. Love Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. 2. Love people around you just as well as you love yourself. It is never hard to know God's will, usually it is just the opposite of our own will much of the time!!!

Do the things you ask for fit into these two areas? If not that may be the problem. Sometimes we ask selfishly just to make ourselves happy/comfortable, etc.

I met Jesus a long time ago when I wanted to kill myself. He rescued me then and has helped me ever since in every part of my life - finances, marriage, children, health, jobs, friends, etc. It has taken me a long time to learn His ways. God's ways are "higher/better" than our ways. For example: God specifically told me to break up with the first guy I ever loved. If I had refused to obey God's will when I was 19, I would have missed the man I married at 27 and still love today in my 50's. At the time God made me see the need to break up, I felt devastated. I got physically sick I was so upset over it all. But that guy was a heroin addict, even though he said he was a Christian. I don't know if he ever got clean/sober. My husband is a wonderful man, whose worst fault is a tendency to be a workaholic. However, He is 10 times better than my first love.

Long story short, GOD knows what you need better than you do; His love for you led Him to give up His most precious Son to rescue you from spiritual death. Anyone who will do so much for you CAN BE TRUSTED TO THE ULTIMATE LIMITS OF TRUST!

YOU CAN'T LOSE YOUR FAITH, that isn't possible. YOU JUST CHOOSE TO TRUST YOURSELF MORE THAN GOD, which is ALWAYS A MISTAKE.

The will of God is that we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ! Jesus made the truth extrodinarily clear in John 6:40 when he said "And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that everyone which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day"

The only way to find God's Will for YOU is to look at your past!...

"I am the beginning and the end". WE are what is In between... (like a book)

If you lose Faith in God and you know THEE truth then you have to realize that you don't know God.
Knowing God is knowing yourself.. THIS is God's Will. Everyone has it's place and purpose..

I thought that I was fighting against my own Will at one time.. until I found myself in different situations. I was taken out of my comfort zone only to be rejoined back with my family.

At the time I KNEW something was going on and decided to pay attention to whatever "it" was.

Come to find that being brought back to my family I was to be with my brother and to get to know him and tell him that I love him a year before he passed away unexpectadly.

After he passed away, and me being out of my comfort zone.. I knew God had given me and my brother the chance to get to know eachother more so. THIS IS GODS WILL...

God's Will includes "synchronisities" and "things happening" for a reason. Once you start to find yourself in situations you can't explain and something happens for a reason BECAUSE of it.. KNOW that you are apart of God's Will.. as well as the other people that had a part in the "synchronicity".

I have teachings on faith and miracles here if you want to see..

Then you are not asking to "know God's will." One of my favorite Bible verses is Psalms 25:4, "Make me to know Thy ways, O Lord, teach me Thy paths." We should be praying and asking at all times, as Jesus did, "THY will be done."

The article below is very good, and will answer your question well. I know people hate "cut/paste" that is why I refer you to it. It is not so long that you'll spend 3 hrs reading it! It's only a couple of paragraphs, but you will understand what they are saying.

Have a blessed day.

that is why we always pray within God's will. we know some things He just wont do, like give me a jet. the bible also says if you ask and do not recieve, you ask amiss! what are your intents? serving God or serving yourself?

if you're teachable and guidable, God wont do you wrong. He is more concerned with making us holy than happy or healthy. coz once you bite the dust, righteous or wicked, you stand as you are. woe is me if my soul be wrong...

That everyone blindly believe in his omnipresent benevolence. To obey his every whim without question. Stay as far away from Satan as possible, as Satan would have us think for ourselves and know the difference between good and evil. And finally never to apply "You shall know them by their works" to himself as that would lead you to believe he is nothing more than a psychotic tyrant. This is God's will.
