But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
- 2 Timothy 3:14,15.

It means the person was taught the scripture from young childhood. That way they know the way of salvation, which is in Jesus Christ alone. It also says in the Bible " Bring up a child in the way he should go. When he is old from it he won't depart".

Jonathan, to me this passage speaks of warning. A warning not heeded by most today. Peter warned people would twist Paul's writings to their own destruction, as they also do the other scriptures. What was actually taught by Paul, and what is said that Paul taught are two different things. It is important to realize that Timothy, as well as people in general, could continue to claim to teach what Paul said but would really be twisting them. Not that that happened to Timothy, but it could have, and it has today with most religious people. Another part of this passage reminds us where Timothy learned these 'things'. It was not actually Paul. It was the Father through the Spirit. The Scriptures, in this case the Law and Prophets, or Paul oratory, or epistles; the actual understanding came from the Father. This is not the case with most people today. They would rather trust the commentaries than the Spirit of Truth. They reject the law and the Prophets, and twist these and Paul's writing to their own destruction, as promised. All the while being very religious. If this was the warning to Timothy then, what do you suppose Paul would think today? He would not be allowed in the pulpit of most churches. He goes on to speak of the Scriptures that are actually breathed inspiration from the Father, and how they accomplish this and are able to make one PERFECT. How many even believe that?
YES, a warning is what this passage means to me.
We sometimes think that people can view things different than what we understand the Scriptures to be saying, but here Paul plainly shows the narrow way is indeed narrow and not whatever someone wants. People that reject the law and the teachings of the prophets prove themselves to be deceivers.

The apostle Paul wrote to the young man Timothy: “Continue in the things that you learned and were persuaded to believe, knowing from what persons you learned them and that from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through the faith in connection with Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:14, 15) From Timothy’s early childhood, his mother and grandmother had firmly grounded his faith in God on knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. (Acts 16:1; 2 Timothy 1:5) Later, when they became Christians, they did not force Timothy to believe but “persuaded” him by means of sound reasoning based on Scriptural knowledge.

By the time this epistle was written there was the worsening decline, all in Asia had turned away from Paul and the ministry that Paul was used by God to carry out.

2 Timothy 1:15
" This you know, that all who are in Asia turned away from me, of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes"

Paul had entrusted and taught this young brother Timothy and in these verses we see that the antidote of the inoculation against all the decline was the Divine Word of God. Timothy was urged to continue in the things that he had learned and been assured of. Knowing from which ones he learned them from.
Brother Timothy, in addition to the knowledge that he had received of the New Testament ministry had also received a good foundation from his childhood of the Old Testament. So he was fully perfected and equipped to minister the Word of God, not only in caring for the church but also in confronting the worsening decline of the church.

There is also another charge from Brother Paul to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2

" And the things which you have heard from me through many witnesses, these commit to faithful men, who will be competent to teach others also"

This is such a strong warning to us even now in the last days. Today there are many waves and teachings and doctrines that are contrary to the healthy teaching and healthy word that is revealed in the New Testament Ministry.
We too need to be equipped and have the word constituted into our very being. Where it is not just there as Knowledge but also as our practical real experience.
I am just so impressed that this word that we have is such an antidote that inoculates us from all the contrary things and persons that are so abundant in this time we live in. Paul knew that his time was short, that he would soon be martyred for the Name of the Lord. He needed to know that what he taught Timothy would be so real to him and that Timothy in turn would carefully pass it over in all its essence to faithful men. The key word here being faithful.
Phygelus and Hermogenes must have been the ones who took the lead to desert the apostle because of his imprisonment.(vs 8) May we never such ones in our time.

Ty brother for posting this portion. In it is so much for us to keep close to our heart and live by.

In Christ

It's an encouragment to Timothy. He was a young minister, and Paul was reminding him that he had been well taught in the Scriptures during his life, and that that teaching is what gave him wisdom and was the foundation that led him to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.

Good stuff.

Paul was emphasizing steadfastness in sound doctrine (as mention in other scriptures). At the time, gnostics were inoculating the Church with their heresy (called the science by Paul). He urged Timothy to "keep that which is committed to thy trust."

What this really means to me...

It is telling me that I should hold fast to the doctrine FIRST delivered to the saints. It is telling me that the doctrinal variances of denominations are to be shuned. DENOMINATION IS NOT OF GOD.

The Hebrew King Josiah discovered the lost Law of Moses and realized that his entire generation was in error and that the judgment of God was upon them. In essense, he found the "real deal." At that time, there were many false prophets in the land beguling the people to tresspass against God. So it is in our time WITHIN THE CHURCH itself. Discovering the "real deal" is what needs to happen. Paul told Timothy to hold on to the "real deal" less others come in with heresy and pollute the Gospel corrupting you and the Church.

Do what you are told, and like a Child, believe and follow that which you have been taught and you will be following that path that leads you to being saved.
