just asking for opinions. i know some people think it's rude because basically the other person is asking/demanding for a congratulatory comment, which is sort of like fishing for compliments...

I think for the most part saying 'its my birthday' is just they are informing you of a small fact which is of some importance to them. You aren't obliged to do anything except say 'oh well happy birthday then'. It doesn't cost you anything and it makes them feel good, so its not really a bad thing. I don't think its rude at all. It would be rude if they asked for a favour or token and then you refused, and they tried 'well its my birthday' to swing it their way. other then that, its all good fun.

My birthday is on Christmas Eve. I was never able to have a birthday party on my birthday when i was a kid. As an adult, I never get to celebrate my happy day with my friends as we do theirs. I'm not whining or sayin poor me...I just start celebrating my birthday the day after Thanksgiving!! I get 3-4 weeks to celebrate!! Not to mention....All the holiday parties...In my mind they are like they are like birthday parties!! I love the Christmas season!! All of my friends and family get a hoot out of me celebrating this way. I don't want presents, just the joy of sharing a happy occasion with the people I love best!

Birthdays are important to people. It is fairly dificult to simply look at someone and know it is their birthday so the only way around this is if they tell you.

I think most people are simply telling you this so that you can put their experience in perspective. What you then do with this information is up to you.

Once you know its a special day for them, is it rude for you to ignore the fact?

Yes, I believe that just walking up to someone and saying "It's my birthday!!!!" is very rude. It's only begging for attention and it is very annoying to the person you say it to. It's like saying "It's my birthday, give me a present, pay attention to me!" They don't get enough attention on the other days of the year so they try to make up for it on their birthday.

It would not bother me at all. You are spirited an having fun. As long as you are not interrupting a private conversation or intruding on someone that is private. You can sense the people that it would bother so just use your best judgement. I say enjoy. Happy Birthday whenever it is. Have a good night.

I don't think it's rude. seeking for some attention maybe. the person would not want to be in the Philippines,

If its your birthday, you are the one who have to treat everyone for a meal.

...this way everybody will remember your birthday! :)

Weird.

I dont think its rude at all, maybe saying what did you get me for my birthday? I think that's rude but just telling someone that it's your birthday isnt rude at all in my opinion

I think it is. It is like you are asking for a present. If people know and want to acknowledge that person then they will, but I think it is in bad taste to 'ask' someone to acknowledge you.

I don't think it's rude unless that person is hinting for a gift-that's rude

It Depends on the situation, If on the Phone, talking with a friend and they ask what are you doing Friday? you say " It's my BD we are going out. "
Now if someone runs up to you and says "It's my BD it's my BD, then yes I do.
So it depends.
