Go to your local Mormon church on a Sunday morning. They have greeters at the back of the chapel. Tell them you're a visitor and you'd like to know more about the Mormon church. They'll hook you up with some missionaries that will give you some introductory lessons.
My whole family is Mormon and they're nice, friendly people. Don't feel pressured, because after learning all about it, if you decide not to join, they'll say OK, and go on their way.
Mormons believe in the freedom of one's personal conscience.

The Mormon Church has created a web page that allows users to look up the addresses of Mormon chapels world wide. The site can be found at http://www.mormon.org/worshipwithus/1,20864,,00.html .
When you visit, ask to speak with the bishop, who is the presiding leader of the congregation. Explain to him that you are visiting the church for the first time and that you would like to learn more about the Mormons. With luck, he'll be able to introduce you to members of the congregation who will accompany and help you. You may also wish to ask for the "missionaries," representatives of the Church that can visit you in your home and teach you more about Mormon doctrine. You can also request a visit from the missionaries directly using the website located at http://www.mormon.org/question/talk/0,8554,796-1,00.html .
I hope you enjoy your first visit to an Mormon chapel! The teachings of Jesus Christ have had a great impact for good in my own life. If you'd like to learn more about Mormons, feel free to visit my site at http://www.allaboutmormons.com .

I am LDS, I have served a mission for our church and think I can probably answer your questions very simply.
Yes you can go to any local church and attend the weekly meetings. You can find the phone number in your local phone book as well under The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Conversion is a process that if you are truly interested in learning about the church can be explained further. It doesn't just happen. We expect alot of our members and you need to be commited to living the comandments before you make the decision to join the church. That is done by reading the Book of Mormon, praying, attending meetings, meeting with the local missionarys, and being baptised.
I hope I have been some help, if you have more questions please feel free to ask.

Peter is an excellent source as one who just recently converted.
As was said, you can go to our church buildings and our church services. Most likely, some one will come ask you if you are new and you can just tell them you're not a member and you're just curious. They'll either send you to the bishop or send the missionaries to you. The missionaries will teach you some lessons and answer any questions you have. If you want to be baptized you will have an interview with the bishop to determine if it's what you really want and if you're worthy or if there are any issues that need to be resolved. If you're under 18, your parents would have to give permission. That's really about it.

You can visit and LDS church any week regardless of whether or not you are LDS. Here is a link to help if you want to find a location: http://www.mormon.org/worshipwithus
If you want to convert, you can arrange either through local leaders or members or through the website that I just gave you the link for to meet with some missionaries. They are ordained Elders who devote two years to teaching about the gospel of Christ. They will teach you about the teachings of the LDS church.
Actual conversion is in your heart through the Holy Ghost, but you will be baptized by the priesthood and confirmed a member of the LDS church.
If you have any more questions, feel free to email me. I would love to answer them.

Anyone can go to their services on Sunday. I went once, uninvited and was completely welcome/comfortable. I can't speak for all wards but that should be the experience. To convert, you must take the discussions w/ missionaries, make it known you wish to be baptized/set date, repent of your sins, you then meet w/ bishop(along w/ missionaries), get baptized(usually a Saturday), next day(Sunday) you are confirmed a member of the church. You receive the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands by the priesthood. Now you will again take the first 4 missionary lessons again, as review w/ the missionaries. I think its just a review to help guide/remind you of the commitment you just made. Now you are a LDS! I hope I didn't forget anything.

You can attend LDS meetings long as you wish.
True conversion takes time, I personally prefer people who take the time to understand our belief rather than someone who feel they got pressure into something they later give up on.
I have been a member over 35 years, never regret it.
basic homework such as personal prayer, and study the scriptures daily is how our faith endures.

Yeah, you can come to your local church for as long as you want without converting.
If you want to convert you have to meet with the missionaries and they teach you 4 lessons. You can ask any questions as well. Then you set a baptism date. You do an interview(they ask questions like "do you accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior" etc...and then you're baptized....
------------
Robin, he might not live in an area with a ward....or even a branch. We have a branch in my town, but not enough people for official greeters....just the 2nd councilor at the door smiling LOL!
Also, if you don't know where your local church is (also known as ward or branch depending on size) you can go to www.mormon.org at the top you click "worship with us" type in your town, and it will give you all the churches in that area.

Conversion to Mormonism means baptism into their church membership. The missionaries won't tell you all you need to know in order to make an intelligent decision about whether to sign up or not. You have to do your own research to find out what is involved with that organization. Also, you should know what you have to go through to get out, once you get involved and realize it is not what they told you. Maybe taking these steps will save you a lot of grief so that you are not deceived and making their occult vows and out a whole lot of money like I was.
