You're cruising down the block(on duty of course), looking for law breakers, and then, you notice a scared looking child, wandering around the sidewalk, and the child is about 5 , no parents or adults near by, what would you do?And the kids doesn't know English too.

And lets say you decide to ask the kid where his parents are at, and what if the kid doesn't respond to you, and start to cry?
What would you do?

Oh one more thing, let say you decide to drive the kid to the station, and the kid refuse to get in the patrol car, and was hitting you, or kicking you?

Pull over ask the child where he left his Mom & Dad.
Then I would put out a Found Child Broadcast on the radio, just in case there is another unit responding to a missing child call.
Kids usually do cry when being interviewed.
I have a box full of Tootsie Pops & baseball cards in the trunk. I usually will stay with the child at the location until I hear back from dispatch.
By now I would have already requested a car seat, and a translator, if I can determine the language that the child speaks.
If I have to transport the child and they start fighting, I would handle them gently but firmly. It's normal for a child to act out when they are tired, confused and scared.
There is no way I am going to leave the child there.

Id place the child in my car - notify the supervisor on my shift and discuss the observations (5yr old - unsupervised) and determine an action plan - Maybe a child negligent situation. I can tell you that the child's bad behavior would not determine how I would handle the situation. I wonder how long it would be before they even noticed their child was not around. It also could be a situation where the child left without the parents knowing - and may not be child neglect

I would radio dispatch and find out if any calls for a missing child have been reported; assuming dispatch hadn't already issued a BOLO (Be On The Look Out). for a kid matching his description.

If the child was unable to answer my questions (name/address maybe phone number and parents name) I would ask neighbors in the area if they knew the child or where he lived, or if they had seen him in the neighborhood before.

If I wasn't able to locate a parent or guardian for that child, I would notify dispatch to notify child protective services that I had a child that was possibly missing or neglected.

Well I'm not a police officer yet, but I would try to calm the kid down, and explain that I'm here to help, and call someone who speaks the language the kid speak. Also, look around and see if any neighbor knows the kid , etc.
