Eventually, after/during truely intolerable pain, I believe the brain would shut down because the nerves would be incapable to controling such stimuli and homeostasis would be so imbalanced that the body would simply die.

I beg to differ with those who are saying childbirth is the worst pain imaginable. I've had 3 children naturally (no pain meds) and I can attest to the fact that childbirth is painless compared to the agony that goes with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, or cancer. The first two I suffer with, the pain of cancer I have witnessed.

However, the worst pain a person can endure is the loss of someone close to them, especially if their actions are directly responsible for this.

I suppose there is a limit to how much pain of this sort one can endure before they lose their sanity.

Wow! Great question! Everyone's pain tolerance is different, so I don't think you could actually quantify a limit. But, I'm sure there is a point at which the majority of people would pass out, the brain's way of shutting off the stimuli probably. I wouldn't think you could die from the pain itself, but probably could from whatever was causing the pain, example, gunshot wound, leg being cut off, burning, whatever the assault on the body.

There is a unlimited amount of pain a human can endure. Pain is just a feeling once you touch something it tells your brain it hurts or it doesn't hurt. So basically all our lives we feel pain when we pick up an object or touch something or someone. But after death there is no pain. Only silence.

No,the body can withstand a lot.The question is how much physical pain can the human mind withstand, some are stronger than others.Like me for example I have to get hit incredibly hard to feel any pain and even then I don't show it.Mind over matter.

of course there is. once the body has been put through so much pain it will go into shock and pass out, and then if bad enough, die.

although some people have a very strong will power and tolerance to pain through breathing and concentration exercises.

i was involved in a head on accident back in febuary of this year........ my passenger died on impact. the drunk who hit us head on was treated and released............I on the other hand endured many broken and some crushed bones, was life flighted to another state and now disabled........I hurt so bad when i became conscience about seven days later.
I must have been in tremendous pain because i was classified as combative and noisey (while unconscience) because i was fighting them while they tried to xray and catscan me but also so loud that i was disturbing other patients as i moaned to loudly.
then i came to and had to be told why i was there and that my best friend was dead.............. i hurt beyond the ability to move, and now i think that you become unconscience when the pain gets past receiveable point for your brain...........so................................................. with god willing i think there is no limit your body can endure.

Some individual's hypothalamus gland lack the ability to detect pain. In this case, the answer is no. These individuals often die at a young age.

Yes, in rare cases if a person is in intolerable pain a hospital might have to induce a coma, it is also the reason why we have morphine given out even though it can be highly addictive.

I wouldn't even begin to know how pain would be measured. I guess one can compare but everyone's body is different and definitely one's own mental state is a big factor. Shock alone can kill ya if you let your mind wander enough into that direct.

But thankfully its one of those questions that no one knows. Because I wouldn't want to know how they found it out.
