Your best bet will be going with a military caliber.

30-06 might be a little stiff on the shoulder at the range.

308 is right there but slightly less recoil. Very accurate and can kill any game a 06 can kill. Believe me I asked plenty of dead deer they did not know the differance.

7mm Mauser is a good round around the same saize as the 30-06 it is an old cartridge like the 06 is can be loaded down a little to reduce recoil. 7mm-08 is another good choice it is basicly a 308 necked down to 7mm (.284")

6.5x55mm Sweed would be a real good one but Finding a rifle and ammo in this might get a little hard.

257 Roberts, 25-06 would be a good choice as well the 25-06 is just a necked down 30-06 The 257 Roberts is a tad shorter kind of like the 06 and 308. The 260 Rem would also fall in this catagory. You can shoot these in a good rifle most of the day without hurting yourself.

244Rem 243Win 243wsm and wssm are at the bottom of the barrel as far as power. These are going to do the job but you are going to need to take care and shoot a lot of ammo on the range and get good with it. These will be the lightest recoiling calibers so you can shoot them all day at the range and not worry at all abotu recoil.

Personaly I would go with one in the 25 to 7mm range. My Choice would be either 7mm-08 or the 25-06. With 6.5x55sweed after that.

My 300 win. mag. is my best rifle caliber but I bought a heavy rifle and I've been shooting for years. 270 is a great do everthing round from what I hear but I personally haven't tried it. 303 British is my second all time favorite caliber (love the old Lee Enfields). If you want cheap ammo then limit yourself to what you can buy at stores like Walmart.

All this being said if you haven't shot before DON'T buy a magnum anything. A short action like 243 win, 308 win or 303 brit might be best. Long action rounds like 270 win or 30-06 springfield have significantly more kick (felt recoil). Almost any rifle not properly held can blow your shoulder off so learn how to fire it.

Since you want medium sized game I'll leave out the varmint cals. So here is the basics. 243, 25-06, 270,30-30,280,308,30-06, and a mired other mid-calibers. There are dozens of them out there. Go to the gun store and look at the cost of ammo above .22 caliber and below the .33's, talk to the rep and tell him what your after. That's what they are there for.

Both the 308 and 30-06 fit your description; I have both. Fav is a 1917 Enfield P-17 in 30-06; a tack driver. Ammo for plinking is available and affordable.

You just can't beat the .308, it will do anything a .30-06 will do with less recoil. Only with the relatively un-popular 220grain bullets might the .30-06 have a perceptible edge, but this is really getting into territory best covered by a .300 magnum.

Your best choice is 22-250 for medium size game & target.* If you will be Hunting Deer or Bear then 30-06 or 308 caliber.*

Get a Zastava mauser chambered for 7.62x39. Excellent mid size game round, comparable to the 30/30 in ballistics, and ammo is cheap.Recoil isn't bad at all, using the right loadings you can get consistant good groups at 100 to 200 yards.

.308, fairly decent price, wide selection of ammo. It will do pretty much anything you want it too, with much less recoil than a 30-06.

I would get a .308 with a good Leopold scope 3-9x40mm ...the .308 is a very flexible round that can be loaded for small game to large game...and it is real easy to find brass and bullets to reload...which makes it very cheap to shoot...it is also a very comfortable round to shoot it hardly has any recoil at all and you can consentrate on the shot rather than the recoil..
