I have a sinus infection and the Dr. gave me some Vi-Q-Tuss and it has hydrocodone in it and I know that means I will likely not get a good night's sleep tonight. Is there anything I can do to help me sleep better?

I know hydrocodone usually helps people sleep but I often have bad dreams and don't get a deep sleep, so that is what I meant by saying I know I won't get a good night's sleep.

Sometimes pain meds make you sleep funny. Restless, bad dreams, wake up feeling hung over. Is that what you mean? One thing i would do is make sure I am drinking plenty of water. Yeah, I know it may make you get up during the night but keeping hydrated when you are sick is vital and it helps the meds go through your system more efficiently. Have you tried a netti pot for your sinus infection. It won't cure the infection but it will help move the mucus out and that will help your pain, Using it regularly may help you keep from getting another infection too.

You should sleep just fine on hydrocodone.

Hydrocodone is an opioid painkiller (also used as a cough suppressant) and is a CNS depressant. In other words, it will slow your heart rate and breathing a bit and shouldn't be mixed with other downers because they will have the same effect on you.

It's not wise or needed to take something else to help you sleep. Definately avoid alcohol and benadryl. If you must take something to help you sleep, melatonin should be fairly safe.

Actually, hydrocodone will probably knock you out! I wouldn't take anything else with it unless you talk to your doctor first. Combining hydrocodone and a sleeping pill is not a good idea--that could lead to dangerous side effects, like not breathing!

Hydrocodone will cause most people to get sleepy, but some people have the opposite problem. If it makes you alert, you should take speed to sleep.
