do they just go to some rescue group or something? Same goes with the other animals, like the cats and bunnies and stuff.

Generally they get sent back to the mill from which they came. This is why dogs should NEVER EVER be purchased from pet stores, no matter how cute they look, or how bad you feel for them. If you buy them, all you are doing are keeping these mills in business, and putting more dogs and puppies through those horrible conditions.

I remember what used to happen when I worked in the pet shops and this wasn't long ago. If the dogs get past a certain age they first discount them a few times, then if that doesn't work the dog is put to sleep and the shop owner sends the breeder back the paperwork along with the vet's paperwork saying it was done. Now what some petstores will do is if they know the vet ( like my boss did), he will have the vet fill out the paperwork saying the dog was put down, but try to find a home for them. But not every place is the same

OK... Do any of you see a problem here???? First let me tell you the only pet I have EVER bought from a pet store was a white ferret 15yrs ago. You say don't buy these poor animals, knowing that if they don't find forever homes, they get sent back to horrible conditions. this issue is a double edged sword so maybe you could try to look at things from a dog or cat view instead of a human view. Would you tell some orphan kid "sorry but we don't want you because your mamma popped out crap load of kids and we just want to help the homeless kids, so go back to the squalor you were born in... there is no hope that you will some day save a person. your background says you are destined to go no where." Do ya'll see where I am going with this?

I don't know, but I imagine that they are sent back to the puppy mill to become "breeding stock." They may also be sold to laboratories to be used in experiments. As far as the kittens go,I've heard horror stories that they are used as snake food, and bunnies are definitely used as snake food. You can walk into any pet store and buy a bunny to feed to your snake and no one will do anything about it. Once,I was in a local pet store with a friend, and a man came in and picked out a beautiful little bunny, which sat quietly while it had it's nails trimmed by a girl who worked there. My friend and I were impressed at the sweet nature of the bunny.Imagine our horror when we later found out that the man had bought the bunny for his snake, and that the girl was trimming it's nails so it wouldn't scratch the snake while it was being eaten! The bunnies, rats and mice sold for snake food, should ,in my opinion,be humanely euthanized before being fed to a snake, but some people actually enjoy watching the torture.I won't buy animals from pet stores, except for fish.

Usually they discount the price of the dog to get it sold. If it still does not get sold, they either send it back to the breeder (which is a puppy mill since good breeders do not sell to pet stores). The puppy miller will then do one of 3 things :
A) contact a rescue to remove the animal (not often)
B) kill it and throw it in a field to be used as fertilizer
C) keep it for breeding

I don't know about cats and bunnies. But for the puppies who don't get sold at pet stores, they usually discount the price as they get older and older. If they get too old and are not sold, they might get sent back to the puppy mill to breed more pups to sell to pet stores. I don't know if they get euthanized, they might. But I know they Don't just hand them over to rescue groups. Rescue groups have to fight to get these dogs out of there.

I know some are sent back to the breeder but many times what the pet store will do is sell them at an incredibly low price, eventually most get bought.

They all get sold.

I worked at a pet store for about a year. Never had a puppy that did not sell. They just start lowering the price as the pup gets older.

I had a friend that had a litter of pups for sale...someone opening a pet store called her and asked if he bought all pups, would she give hime a break. Told him nope...pups are $600 firm. He told her he could buy and have puppies shipped to him cheaper than that. Guess when you buy in bulk from puppy mills you can go wayyy down on price.

Good question, I've often wondered the same thing. I've seen plenty of pet store ads for older purebred pups at a very reduced rate.
