My friend told me that I shouldn't drink Gatorade as often as I do because I'm not an athlete and don't need the electrolites in my body...they could potentially do more harm than good..is that true? She also said it's bad for my liver...any comments?

Athletes drink Gatorade because when they sweat, they lose electrolytes, sodium and potassium essential to maintaining peak performance. You need electrolytes in your body to help balance the function of your cells and organs, so you don't necessarily get "Too many electrolytes in your body that you don't need" just from drinking Gatorade every once in a while.

As for the "being bad for your liver" I wouldn't think so. Gatorade is a drink that contains many sugars and calories but I wouldn't see where it could be bad for your liver.

Like I said before, don't stress out over drinking a bottle of Gatorade! It's perfectly fine and a much better choice than most leading soft drinks.

No, it's not bad for you - Gatorade is not just for athletes. That being said, Gatorade was created to help athletes replenish their electolytes - so, drinking too much of it is not a great idea...but it's not going to really harm you. I agree with the other person's comment about the sugar content, and I wonder if the sodium is really high...these things could affect your blood pressure and glucose.

You know, drinking excessive amounts of water can kill you as well....To be safe, I would lay off the gatorade a bit and then ask your doctor their recommendation. You shouldn't be drinking processed drinks so much anyway.

I would be more concerned about all of the calories and carbs. If you aren't using the calories, you will gain weight (just like eating too much).

As far as the electrolytes go, the sodium might be a problem, though. Too much sodium could lead to kidney stones.

From www.gatorade.com:
"In addition to replacing what is lost through sweat, the electrolytes in Gatorade trigger activation of the body’s thirst mechanism, encouraging athletes to fully hydrate themselves." You drink gatorade, you get thristy, you drink more gatorade... It is a never ending cycle. 20 8 oz servings of gatorade and you have 100% of the recommended daily intake of Carbs and Sodium.

You don't drink 5 32 oz gatorades a day, do you?

Like any other drink that's loaded with stuff, including sugars & salts, I'd stay away from it unless you need it.

BTW, Gatorade was created at the University of Florida for football players who play hard in intense heat, Thus, they lose lots of body fluids through sweat. Rapid replacement was thought to improve performance.

Bottom Line: Unless you're engaged in some intense sport in hot weather, I'd stick to good old water.....

SO NOT TRUE.
you'll be fine.
gatorade is a good enough drink to drink
its actually better because of the fact that it doesn't
have as much sugar as all the other ones.
& your liver?
the only drink that could probably do that
is like coke. i think.
