actually one of my friends (17 years old) is a rower and rows for a club in st. louis........he has a well-toned six pack, rowing machines help bcuz they burn a lot of calories if u put an effort into them, they work the abs because you use your core in pulling and pushing.........it doesn't really work the chest though, maybe a little bit

Not really, since rowing is a pulling motion and your chest can only push you know it isn't getting much exercise at all. Your abs also get little work other than keeping your torso stable while you row.

....but the rower is great for your back and biceps and if you can row at different angles you can work other areas more than others.
