The Wikipedia entry says some fans believe Collinsport was supposed to be a ficticious version of Bar Harbor, Maine. I know the series was set in Maine but they didn't say why it was Bar Harbor specifically and not some other town.

Hey, this is neat. Bar Harbor is my old hometown. I am also a "Dark Shadows" fan. I knew the show was set in a fictional coastal town in Maine but never heard it was supposed to be Bar Harbor. It doesn't seem right to me since Bar Harbor is on an island and I don't remember the show mentioning it being an island or driving over the bridge or anything. Then again its been awhile since I caught an episode. I did hear awhile back that there was talk of a movie being made and Johnny Depp had expressed interested in playing Barnabas since he was a big "Dark Shadows" fan. Again probably an unsubstantiated internet rumor.

I just did some reading online and found the opening shots of the ocean and surf were shot in Kennebunkport, Maine so maybe that is the area Collinwood is supposed to be in. The mansion itself that is shown was in Rhode Island.

Ah yet more fans of my fav. show! No, I do not recall reading what town inspired the place, though I believe I recall hearing something about the Collins family owning an island off the coast of Maine as well, but I can't recall if that was in one of the stories Marion Ross wrote about the family, or if it was on the show itself! I liked both Barnabas and Quentin... Had a thing for wer-wolves. Barnabas was more of a brotherly attraction, you know, a pain in the neck???

Collinsport Maine

I think the reason the fictional "Collinsport, Maine" of "Dark Shadows" is thought by some to have been inspired by the non-fictional town of Bar Harbor, Maine is that, as may be seen in many scenes of the television series, the ocean views of "Collinsport" are from high above on cliffs ("Widows Hill," for example), which is the same as the terrain of Bar Harbor.

But perhaps there is also some other basis for this thought of Bar Harbor having been the inspiration of "Collinsport," perhaps in one of the actual episodes of the TV series and/or in one of the two theatrical films based on the TV series and/or in one of the books (by Marilyn Ross) based on the Gothic-horror TV soap opera.

I do recall having heard members of the "Collins" family (or at least "Roger Collins") sometimes traveled (by train?) to Boston, Massachusetts on business, presumably of the "Collins" fishing cannery and shipping fleet. And I thought I also heard mentions of "close-by" Bangor, Maine in some of the episodes. So I think it is safe to assume "Collinsport" closer to middle-to-northern Maine than to southern Maine and New Hampshire. And Bar Harbor would certainly fit that logic, as would also Bath and Camden, Maine.

I did too batgirl2! My house at that time was haunted. I'd hunker down with a bag of doritos and chill bump for 30 minutes.
