He doesnt have fleas, he doesnt scratch them . They seem to mostly be on the top of his back near his tail and around his neck. He lets me pick them off like it feels good and usueally a little bit of hair comes with it. I have known other cats to get this too so I think it has to be somewhat common. I just would like to know what causes it . It seems like after I pick them all off after a while they go away . But then they come back after a few months unpredictable.
What do you think it is and what causes it? I would like to make it go away forever.

Seattle is right. It is not from fleas, or fighting. He is a house cat , has not exposure and I have checked often for fleas. I went to the web site she provided . IT was right on. The photos were exactly what I am dealing with.
I dont use plastic bowls so I know its not from them . I will use the fish oil too as she and the site recommended.

Hi there...it may be possible your cat has stud tail/feline acne. Some cats produce more oil near the base of the tail and around the chin/neck regions.

Even though you say no fleas. I would guess flea allergies. You know some cats are very good about cleaning the fleas off with there tongue. But one flea bite can turn into a rash with little scabs and bumps. So if he is allergic you need to use Advantage whenever you see the bumps and see if they go away. If so do they seem to come back in 30 days once it is no longer effective if so this would give you a pretty good indication that it was flea allergies.

If not maybe food allergies, but not as common. Might want to change foods for a month and see if they go away.

You can't diagnose the cause of scabs by matching up the symptoms with what you've read on th e internet! Random scabs are indeed common, and there are many different causes.

Being an indoor cat does NOT make cat safe from fleas, get that myth out your head right away! I know it's too late and you've decided you know what's going on and how to treat it, but just remember when this problem comes back, don't turn back to Yahoo Answers - go to a vet.

My kittens like this, I just notice lots of little red dots on her head and under her chin. I giv her flea treatments every 4 weeks but she just has mad scratching fits now n then. I noticed that she had a scab about the size of a 5p piece on her chin a few days ago, took her to the vets but she is perfectly healthy, no fleas, tick, etc. Just loves to scratch herself raw. It still worth getting it checkd out though by a vet to be on the safe side :) it could be nothing, just loves scratching but they may be having a slight fight when your not about, try to keep an eye on them :) Hope this helps

I have a cat that got feline acne around his mouth and it looks like black heads and to cure that I changed him to glass feeding dishes and got rid of the plastic.
Next time your cat gets this take him to the Vet and ask what could be causing this problem. I've never had one to have this type of problem.

i agree with the answer about being allergic to fleas. i have a long hair calico and about 2-3 times a year she would get a rash just as you said on the base of tail and neck. i have only ever found 1 flea on her, but i put the advantage on her and i have never had the rash since!

Are there any other cats around he could be fighting with? I know my cat sometimes gets in fights with his sister or other cats outside. I think those are common areas to get scratched in a fight.
