How old is it? Does it still work? Is it fine for what you need it for? What format is it? Battery life and so forth...

My family has had an old Video8 camcorder from '92 in the closet for over 5 years now, but now I just purchased a new HDD camcorder from JVC.

my camcorder is 6 years old, miniDV. however i have several portable camera and recorder combinations. one panasonic PV9400 VHS and one hitachi VLS100 SVHS. i used to like the separates because that would balance the load, one on each shoulder. anything analog is obsolete now, just a curiosity. The batteries were good for about 1 hour, the camera powered off the recorder battery through the cable.

Mine was bought in 1999, when my daughter was born;
a sony camcorder using 8mm tape. As compared to those newer model, my camcorder is extremely bulky. there is a DV interface, but no USB. The battery is lithium, but it's getting harder to make it last after a full charge.

Have intended to upgrade but not sure whether to go for tape again, or DVD, or HDD.

There are still life in old camcorder. Friends will often borrow your camcorder to convert their 'old tapes' to DVDs.
