Without proof, I cling with Hope to Faith.

I call myself Christian because that is what identifies me with Jesus Christ. We've had that label for thousands of years. Every human being has a need inside them which makes us search for hope and meaning in life. We are designed that way. Money, friends, work or anything else will not satisfy that need. I bet you too have at some point asked the same.

Jesus claimed to be God. Some disagree with that statement but you can see for yourself in scripture. It's full of references. Now If God manifested himself in human form and demonstrated his power as proof so that many people were eye witnesses to this, I'll believe them the same as I would believe other historical figures and events. I have also witnessed the changed lives of people today. Not all who claim to be Christian, but many. Jesus told us what we need to do to receive that hope and purpose and eventual eternal life. I've lived in a state of sin and in righteousness. I know the difference because it's as real as the world we live in.

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

I can only answer for myself.

I was born into a christian family and for a while I just believed what I was taught without question. (age birth to 10)

Then I started to notice hypocrisy and unchrist-like behavior in many professing christians. (age10-14)

Then I learned how to play the game and say the right things to the right people at the right time to be accepted. (age 15-25)

Then life became very serious -- marriage, 2 sons, career in surgery, debt, unmet expectations, death of two siblings to suicide and murder, unfulfilled dreams, confusion about life's purpose.... (age 26 - 33)

Then a sincere, serious study of the authenticity of the Bible, the self-made claims of Jesus Christ, an insatiable hunger for Truth and meaning and purpose. (age 33 - now (37))

The evidence is overwhelming in the support for the authenticity of the New Testament text. The text has been scrutinized under the same tests that all literature of antiquity is subjected to. There is not even a close second to the number of supporting data for the authenticity of the N. T. gospels. -- so I chose to believe the evidence -- what I read in my New Testament in 2007 is what the writers wrote over 2,000 years ago!

Then I examined the self-made claims of Jesus Christ. Since He claimed to be God then I had to make a choice about Him -- was He a liar, a lunatic, or Lord God? Since 11 of his apostles went on to be martyred for the cause of Christ then I reasoned that they must have been convinced that Christ Jesus is God because even though many people die for a lie, they only die for a lie that they believe is the truth. All of the apostles wrote their books soon enough after the crucifixion and resurrection that unbelieving eyewitnesses were still alive to critique their writings. If they would have exaggerated in order to manipulate history then their writings would have been immediately rejected as a laughing stock. So I reason that they must have accurately recorded what many people (believers & unbelievers) witnessed.

So the evidence was sufficient enough to give me confidence in the Biblical text.

Now I have a mature faith in my savior Jesus Christ because it has been tested and Jesus has shown Himself faithful and reliable.

People adhere to Christianity because original Christianity is true. 16th century and subsequent Christianity is partially false. Original Christianity is the thinking man's religion. Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason).

For beginners, I recommend "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis, a Cambridge professor who was an atheist and became a Christian -- a Catholic in belief if not in name. He expounds the "proofs." You obviously have not made an objective examination of the evidence.

All the evidence in science that I have examined forced me to acknowledge God as the Final conclusion of my effort. After that I examined the question "Since, God exists, Does he care about us?" I continued to consider this question and examining creation. I concluded he must, since I live on a planet that provides me with everything I need to exist and to enjoy this existence. I examined some of the world beliefs and a little of their history, I concluded that the bible had an accurate history, (it is used to find dig sites in archeology). Then, after studying the core principles of Christianity found in the bible, I really was astonished with there elegance. The personality of the God of the bible really appealed to me. That's it... Journey well

When you truly step out in faith and trust Jesus as your Savior- your faith becomes sight. This is not blind faith- Jesus said- "blessed are those who have not seen, yet believe"- Job never saw God face to face- but He said- "I know my Redeemer lives"- and he did not say this until after his life fell apart. By the way, since you say there is not proof that God exists- then there is no proof that He doesn't either- what if He does?
EDIT- Jesus M- great answer

Because it is the absolute truth. There is no proof of Christianity? Everything and I mean everything is proof of the bible. I suppose you believe billions of years ago a big bang created everything we see. I personally have never known an explosion that has created order, but I suppose if one doesn't want to believe in God, that is there only option to believe the ridiculous theory of evolution. The probablility that 43 prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus is 1 in 10^53 and there is a total of 200 prophecies, and these prophecies were written in the O.T even before Jesus existed. If one thinks the bible was tampered with look no further to the dead sea scrolls. Also the Jews rejected Jesus, so it wouldn't even make sense for them to lie about it.

The bible warns people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Because Christianity offers mankind a reason to live and die for. Because Christianity offers reason for hoping amidst the troubles of life and loving even the enemy. Because Christianity offers eternity even if you rot in the present! Because there is truth in Christianity which the soul could recognize even if the mind sometimes try to disregard.

Its not just them, some people seem to fall prey to a belief in spiritual things as some form of hope for a better life.

In spite of the fact that god has a very spotty record of helping anyone at all. There haven't been any miracle events since ancient times, so trying to find any kind of proof is elusive.

There are MANY things I have no proof of, yet I believe in them. Prove to me that there is such a thing as complete darkness. Describe 'cold' without using your body's reaction to it. Can you?

It takes intelligence to admit that things we don't understand ARE possible. The minute you think you have all the answers, is the minute you become a complete dumbazz. I don't believe in creationism but I believe in a higher power. Many people who don't believe in God, DO believe alien life forms exist...yet, there is no proof of either.I personally believe in both.

Not to mention...if what I believe is right...then I will eventually go to heaven. If what I believe is not right, and there's nothing after death...then it just won't matter, will it? What happens if YOU'RE wrong?

There IS proof to me. I love God. Jesus is my Savior.

Why do you believe as you do?

Are you open-minded and respectful enough to accept that others do not believe as you do? Are you really so immature as to think that YOU are right and others are wrong? Are you?
