Six sigma in production application is used to predict your process capability. In a production process that has high volumes, checking a dimension 100% is less and less practical as volumes reach the millions and billions.

So instead of checking 100%, you take a significant sample to represent the total population. The mean and the standard deviation are both taken. A standard bell curve is then drawn to represent the total population. The curve is centered on the production mean, not the spec mean.

Now if your process was good enough, the standard deviation will be small enough so that 6 x Sigma will be smaller than the total spec range for that dimension.

Usually the mean will be off by a small amount. This allows the company to make adjustments to the process so they can optimize this process and 'shift' the curve.

Keeping a chart of your progress will also give you first indication that something is wrong. If your chart starts shifting, or if it starts getting 'messy' like having double humps, you will know something is wrong.

The most basic meaning is from statistics. It refers to a normal distribution of numbers and normal has a very specific meaning, it is the classic bell shaped curve or a Gaussian distribution. You need two measurements to mathematically define the bell shaped curve, an average (where is the population centered) and a standard deviation (how much variation is there around the average). Sigma is the greek symbol for standard deviation. Six sigma means, typically, that all but 3.4 out of a million (999,996.6 out of a million members of the population) fall within the limits. The hard core statistics are a little complicated because, typically, the 6 sigma limits are based on plus or minus 4.5 sigma (where sigma is a short term estimate of the true sigma) and a 1.5 sigma shift (to estimate that the true or long term sigma will be higher). Six sigma is a process control strategy. "Six sigma" literally means 6 standard deviations. This is a very low probability event, several orders of magnitude less than 0.01%.

The basic idea is that by applying a program of statistical measurement processes can be better understood and optimized to give the best possible outcome.
