Hi, I'm in a desperate attempt to operate a Mac, the thing is I'm trying to extract recorded sound into Garage band, but to do so, I first have to chop it down from a stereo file, to a mono sound file, and probably afterwards convert it in to an AAF, or OAF or some other acronym. How can I achieve that on Final Cut pro, or soundtrack pro so that I can modify the file on Garage band?

I assume you would be satisfied to do this in iTunes, as it is free and probably already on your Mac.

First, add the song file to the iTunes library if it is not already there. Then go to the iTunes menu > Preferences > Advanced > Importing. There you see a drop list for Settings. Choose Custom... In "Channels:" choose mono. Then go back to the library list ("Music" is how it is labeled in my version). Select the song you want to have as mono. Then go to "Advanced" in the top menu, and "Convert selection to ____ " (mine says MP3 because I have my iTunes preferences set to use MP3 for all imports -- Windows friends sometimes can't use AAC files). You will end up with a second listing in the library list for the same song. Look in the iTunes Music folder (usually the default is home > Music > iTunes Music) and you should find a second file of the same name (actually, it should be "LightMyFire1.mp3") but it will be half the size. That's the mono one.

Use this setting for converting as many files to mono as you like because when you are totally done, you want to set iTunes back to stereo import setting. Otherwise all future song imports will be mono.
