why is the story of the stars so important, why have all the societies felt the need to use it as a base for religions why is it so secretive, and how did the egyptians find out about it in the first place?

They looked up in the dark, in a time when there were no electric lights. By looking often enough, they saw certain patterns of stars appearing at certain times of the year, noted the patterns, and made up stories about what they looked like to remind themselves of what appeared when. That way they could make better plans about farming, herding, seasonal floods, etc.
Knowledge is power, so some of the information was hoarded, for profit and to keep the uninitiated from messing things up with uninformed interpretation. In time, more celestial details were observed and more interpretations were added on. Voila! Star-based religion!

It was actually known as "God's story in the stars" long before Satan twisted it into astrology.
It goes from Virgo (the Virgin Mary) to Leo (Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah) and there's a whole cool story of all the inbetweens.
Even the Spinx on the Giza plateau tells the story. The head was originally that of a woman (Virgo) and of course the body is that of a Lion. The Pharoah's came along many hundred's of years later and restructured the face to a man.

As a means of navigation. The stars are more reliable than your digital wrist-watch.
Secretive because edumacation wasn't as wide-spread then as it was now, and back then, knowledge was power. Unlearned people feared learned people back then
Egyptians sailed everywhere. They may have made a journey to the "new" world before the Vikings did.

This is the Mazzeroth. It tells the story of Christ. Go around the wheel from Virgo to Leo, just like Christ. It is as old as the human race, older.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. [There is] no speech nor language, [where] their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,..." Psalm 19:1-4
"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:" Gen 1:14

There is no mystery; people make one out of it. The stars falling from the sky will be an indication that the end has come according to the bible.
