Has anyone in fact gotten mad at you for holding the door? I'm a white woman of a certain age, if I pull open the door at the Post Office or anywhere else, I glance behind me to see if somebody is right there. If so, I hold it for them and they thank me. I am comfortable when a person extends me the same consideration.
Indignation at having a door held is like bra-burning, it's a primeval male fear. Men claim that a friend of a friend was cursed for holding a door, but it just doesn't happen. Woman or man, we appreciate a simple courtesy.

Its the right thing to do no matter what other people may think. People are different and some people may very highly appreciate that you hold the door open and some may insult you . You never know who will appreciate so continue to do the right thing. These values are always looked upon kindly by most people and the ones that insult you are probably unkind to begin with . By showing them your kindness it probably will make them think differently the next time someone opens a door for them.

Some people are rude no matter what. I love it when people hold the door open for me since I always have my baby in my arms and my 4 year old at my side. Thank you to all you door holding people!

I've always thought it was the polite thing to do as well.
Last year, though, I held it open for an elderly couple walking into a store behind me and the man got very upset- going as far as to shout at me saying he was capable of holding it himself.
I still hold doors open for people, but only when they're walking to a door directly behind me, I don't wait for them unless their hands are full.

yes, it is a nice thing to do. there are just some people who have issues with the stupidest things. it's a shame friendliness can't be shared well amongst strangers. i try to all the time, but there are just some people you can't please.
so feel good for knowing you done the right thing, while the other person can just go on with their unhappy life.

It is a nice thing. But I no longer do it for old men because they usually flip out.
