I currently subscribe to Time Warner Cable's basic cable. I was planning on buying an HDTV and wondering if it was necessary to upgrade to HD service to get my HDTV to work the best.

To get HD programming, you must subscribe to their HD service (although by law they're required to provide you at least your local channels in HD for free... but you'll probably still need to call them to have those channels activated).

Most cable channels are still only in "standard definition", meaning they're only 480 lines of definition and presented in a 4:3 screen ratio. HD channels, on the other hand, have up to 1080 lines of definition and a ratio of 16:9 (assuming the source material was shot in HD... otherwise, old "standard def" programming will display black bars on either side of the picture, unless you stretch it).

At this point in time, the cable and satellite providers have a secondary range of channels that are basically duplicates of the most popular standard def channels. For example, I have Cox in the LA area. CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, CNN, ESPN are on channels 2, 4, 7, 11, 14 and 15, respectively, in standard definition. To get the high definition version of those channels, I would tune to channels 702, 704, 707, 711, 714 and 715, respectively.

You should take note that the reange of channels that are even available right now is not large, although it is growing. For example, with Cox, I think I have about 20 HD channels. But lately, they've been adding a couple of new channels every month as HD becomes more popular.

So, short answer, yes, to take full advantage of your new HDTV, get the HD service from your cable provider. Otherwise, you're just wasting your money on a new TV, as an HDTV won't actually improve the picture of a standard definition source above that of a standard CRT TV.

BTW, you can also get free HD channels "over the air" using an old fashioned UHF antenna!

TimeWarner Cable gives you digital Cable television, digital telephone centers and intense-speed on line. apart from that provider, Dish community is likewise nicely-beloved for offering stunning centers. it rather is honestly-known for offering unfastened HD and watch television everywhere centers at a life like fee.

You can simply get the HD-PVR, but keep basic service. It includes all locals and UHD, Mojo, HdNet and several others. All for just the DVR rental. I'm paying $24/month for this.

They TRIED to sell me a higher package, but then eventually said Basic service includes HD, but I needed a box.

It is highly recommended.
