This is for prior/current Military. What is the Dumbest thing you ever seen someone do? The kind of stupidity where you do not even know what say to the person, while thinking natural selection missed this person type stupid.

I saw a guy doing maintenence on a piece of Active Sonar equipment (440VAC, >100a), move a switch that was covered by a big red tag that said "Danger, Operation of this equipment may result in serious bodily injury or Death" By the way this tagged switch was to protect the divers working next to the Active Projector AND the Guy working inside the equipment!

Dumbest thing? Somebody married my ex-wife

So many possibilities...

In the first Gulf War we had a young troop who (mistakenly) thought he was just processing for a mobility exercise so his bag had nothing but junk in it. He spent the first month wearing the same uniform/same skivvies. He DID think to bring his entrenching tool though. USAF by the way.

I once jettisoned a fuel tank from an F-16 which I thought was the stupidest thing ever. Afterward about half the shop told me they had done it too at some point so that doesn't rate so high for me anymore.

Had a flight engineer on H-3s take one of my M60s out with the regulation two barrels and come back with one. For some reason he unlatched the barrel for a failure to feed then cycled the operating handle somewhere over the Yellow Sea.

In Iraq while still burning our crap the last squad that cleaned it out decided to leave some gas in it. We found an old wooden shed that we used for an outhouse. My soldier goes in during the night shift with a lit shop towel so he could see what he was doing (why he didn't use a flashlight I'll never know) drops it in the can and needless to say nearly burnt down the shack. He comes in the van and said "Um corporal the sh*t shack is on fire. I go take a look and yell to get a shovel. My soldier then shoves a whole pile of dirt and just like in a cartoon all this black soot and smoke go around his face.
Needless to say the next day you could see the burnt mark on the roof.

Three things I always remember:

One time a soldier had heard that the M1911A1 .45 cal would not fire if you used your hand and pushed in the receiver from the front of the barrel, anyway, he tried it, the round went through his hand and that was that.

Another time, I seen a soldier tie a floor buffer cord around his neck and throw the floor buffer out the window. He was on the second floor of the barracks, and needless to say, the cord was to long and nothing happened. Everyone, except him knew that the cord was too long and nothing would happen. Only when he was about to jump out the window did we stop him.

We had just finished gunnery and this soldier's vehicle had just fired several thousand rounds out of the barrel on the machine gun. He got up on top and decided he was going to get off the vehicle, but he also decided to grab onto the barrel on the way down, he let go pretty quick too.

I remember many others, probably too many to say.

A guy was fishing off the fantail and caught a bunch of small fish. He put him in a creel sack and put it in his locker when he went to change. He forgot them. About 2 weeks later the air conditioning system went down and the rot really started to smell. During compartment cleaning a guy opened this locker (the idiot left it unlocked) trying to find out what smelled and the odor made him puke his guts out.

The guy who put the fish there was an Operations Specialist, it figures. They eventually took his rate away and sent him down to Deck Department to work as a side cleaner for the rest of his enlistment. He also used to have to go to medical each night and shower there, in front of the duty Hospitalman, because he'd go months without a shower if not supervised.

Had an officer looking for weak spots in our armor with a hammer and circle the spots with chalk. We had a good laugh, but he didn't when he found out there was no such thing to do.

But a guy once looked at the sun with binoculars at Ft. Irwin.
He got out with a Section 8 later.

When I was at 29 Palms doing a comined arms exercise, there was a scorpion walking around. Some Marine picked it up and it stung him. They had to medivac him out of the training area.

well since im going to boot camp in June, ill talk about my MEPS experience.

I was taking my oath with 2 other people in the room, one was a guy and one was a girl. The girl started laughing during the middle of the oath, and the guy forgot the words even when repeated. It was sad.

. The dumbest BY FAR thing I have ever seen was when a male shipmate in A school snuck into a girls room (coed ship) and when the watch knocked on their door, they BOTH hopped out the second story window, absolutely priceless.

I saw a guy jump off the ship and start swimming in the harbor. The master at arms got in a small boat and went after him (and of course they got him).
He was already in trouble for a bunch of other stuff and this just added to it.

In the Middle East teaching local military how to probe for claymore mines (live ones I might add. Their idea, not ours.) and dissarm them. Gave them lots of training, then it was their turn after a couple weeks.

Funniest thing I saw was seeing them (during my running in opposite direction) walk and probe backwards into the minefield.
