I have this friend (not sure if hes clean or not) and I know that his life generally, well, sucks.

So today he was saying all this crappy stuff about his mom (he lives with her). But then he said that he was going to talk to his counselor about disowning his mom?! (and going to live with this one other kid that has gotten kicked out of more than four schools, and the one we go to MULTIPLE TIMES)

Is this even possible?? WTF???

Disown? No. If he he has cause and the means, he can ask a court to emancipate him so he can live on his own. But sounds like that will not happen. He could also ask that he live with his father. But again; that would be a court thing.

You didn't state his age, but I get the impression that he's a minor. A minor in the US can’t just disown their parents. A minor of a certain age (usually 16) can petition for emancipation, but emancipation is RARELY granted in any state. There are many requirements for it and based merely on what you’ve said, he’s not going to meet the requirements. First, he has to prove that he’s capable of behaving in an adult manner, and the fact that he’s broken the law proves the contrary and indicates that he is in need of supervision. Second, in order to be emancipated a minor has be capable of fully supporting theirself (while remaining in school)—paying for rent, utilities, food, medical expenses, etc. Fully supporting yourself means being able to pay all those bills on your own, not moving in with someone else and depending on them to pay the bills or even pay a portion of them.

If his mother is abusive or neglectful (ie she fails to provide him with the basic necessities of life, fails to obtain medical care when it’s clearly needed—for example when a bone has been broken—etc) and that can be *proven*, then the court *might* (depending on how bad it is) remove him from the home and place him in the custody of the state. Then the state will decide where he lives, which will either be with a relative (if there’s one who can take him in) or in a foster home.

A child can be removed from the parent if the parent is very unfit.
A teen can under some cases move out and become "emancipated" if s/he can get along alone. Also, a teen can under some circumstances chose to live with somebody other than the parents.

no matter how bad his parents are.. they are the reason why he's here doing what he does..... why disown them instead of trying to help them??? does he know what they went through to bring him into this world??? its sounds like he doesnt.... make him rethink that.... and honey... looks can be deceiving... and there is always a reason why a person is a certain way..... ask ur friend... ever put himself into their shoes??? what if that happens to him? would he like it? i dont think so......

It's called emancipation, but there has to be reason for this to happen. It sounds to me like he's just like any other rebellious child. The phase will soon pass.

Can you live without breathing!!!!
You can't choose your parents, only your friends, sounds like this person needs a good friend more then anything else:o)

I think that it is possible but i don't really reccomend doing it. Your friend might actually be sorry about doing it after they disown their mom.
But its up to him. whatever he wants to do i guess.
