Well, when you think of it, it is likely partially true. A lot of people donate tithing in the form of stock (this can have certain tax benefits as opposed to donating cash). I am betting that some people have likely donated stock in some beverage companies like coca-cola and Pepsi. I don't know what the LDS church does with the stock, but at least for a period of time they own a portion of these companies. I have also heard the rumor that the LDS church owns anheuser-busch.

When something confirms what we already believe we tend to accept it without a lot of questioning our examination. When something contradicts what we believe we question it, or dismiss it outright, especially if it comes from a source we consider suspect.

Those who would like to believe that the Mormon Church is untrue will accept without a lot of question or examination any statement which seems to bring discredit to the Church. The idea that the LDS Church would own Coca-Cola or Pepsi appeals to those who see some kind of hypocrisy in that. So they aren't motivated to find out if it is really true or not, and will repeat it because that is what they want to believe.

It is intellectually dishonest, but sadly it also seems to be human nature.

I remember those rumors about the LDS church owning stock in (gasp!!!!) Coco Cola and Pepsi. Maybe that is why those companies have non-caffeinated drinks now. Just kidding. The church owning those companies? Rumors. Owning stock in them? Maybe. I could speculate that the stock of those two soda companies was donated to the church by John Marriott, Sr. He did have a root beer stand and through his business savvy, he created the Marriott conglomerate of restraunts and hotels the world over. I did get this info of him owning stock in the other soda companies by one of my cousins. He did open franchises of A&W Root beer restraunts and since A&W is now distributed by I believe Pepsi, it is reasonable to assume that the stock he accumulated was from the soda conglomerate and that he donated it to the church.

Awww!!! Oregon Flower, I haven't heard from you for a little while. Yes, it could be true that the Church of Jesus Christ is buying radio and television stations and also farm land, but would you rather have a church owned radio and television stations that will show family friendly shows, or would you rather have these station remain with the original owners intent to feature shows like Jerry Springer, NYPD Blues, or even Desperate Housewives. Also, how about the buying of farmland. For info's sake, these farms are designated to replenishing the bishop’s storehouses and also are used for relief efforts in places like New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina, or even the Southern California wildfires this year. Wow!!!! What a terrible conspiracy. The horror of it all. I believe that is a very Christian thing to do, don't you think?

Also, the caffienated drinks mentioned in the Doctrine and Covenants is the hot drinks coffee and tea. Caffienated sodas are allowed since their is no doctrine forbidding there consumption.

I am LDS and had never heard this rumor. It doesn't surprise me though. People just need something to gossip about I guess.
Also to the one who cleared up the farmland thing - Good job! I don't understand why people always have to talk dirt about things they know nothing about.

I think that it is because some of the Elders of the Church owned stock.

Maybe, someone left the church some stock in those companies, and someone found out and thought it would be cute to tell everyone that the church OWNS them.

Dunno... they're looking for dirt and that's the best they can come up with?

I kinda figured it was stockholder-owned.... Like the Snopes article says, I wouldn't be surprised if some of those stock holders were LDS, but that doesn't mean that the church itself owns the company.

The Mormon Church owns a lot of stock in Pepsi. Haven't heard about Coca-Cola.

they definitely don't own Coca-Cola. I've heard the Pepsi myth, but I'm not sure how true it is.
