My husband came into the US with a CR1 - spousal immigrant visa. How long does it normally take to recieve a social security number? Anyone have any personal experience with this? Did you have to fill out additional paperwork?

i came into the country with a CR-1 as well. from what i remembered, i needed to wait till my green card arrives in the mail. once we received it, we went to the nearest social security administration office to apply for a social security number. we brought all my immigration papers but all that was asked to be shown was my passport and the green card. then we were given a letter that shows we applied for an SSN. within a week, my SSN arrived in the mail. it should be fast.

additional paperwork... i don't really remember filling out some forms. i might have, actually. if so, it would only be one piece of paper. sorry, i know it was only in march 2007... but i don't remember anything more than what i told you =) i remember it was easy and fast though. it was the waiting that was long. be sure to get there early in the morning. you get priority numbers so whoever arrived first, gets served first.

ps. since your husband came into the country the same way i did, all he needs to show really are his passport and green card. he can't apply for a driver's license or permit since the SSN is one of the requirements. there isn't any work authorization card also since the green card serves that purpose. the green card allows him to live and work here. and in order to work... you need an SSN =) so it's just passport and green card. you might want to bring all his immigration papers as well... just in case.

With the approval of I-765, your spouse will receive EAD (Employment Authorization Document) Card. With the card and Receipt Notice of the immigrant application (I-485), your spouse need to go to your area Social Security Agency and should apply the SSN. Most of people get their SS Card within a week. Good luck.

I got mine within six days after applying for a SSN. Alot depends on if your paperwork is in order. At the office I just filled out a standard application form for a SSN, I had to show my passport, work authorization card and driving license
