The biggest cause of instability are anterior cruciate ligament tears (you would have had an injury with a pop and lots of pain, its not something that the don't notice!) and more likely a torn knee cartilage (meniscus) Unfortunately they don't heal . You need to see an Orthopaedist through your GP.. A MRI scan can be useful but thy can be obvious without one. Key hole surgery to trim out the damaged cartilage works very well an isn't that big a deal, in and out on the same day usually and a couple of weeks rest and gentle exercise.

Have you had a knee injury at some point? Could be a bit of chipped bone in the joint that is moving about. You should go to the doctor and get it checked out.

At the very least, stretched ligaments. This can cause instability and pain. At the worst, the ligaments are partially torn. If it was a complete tear the pain and swelling would be severe and you'd have trouble even standing on that leg.

It sounds like you have fluid on your knee.
But it would be a good idea to get it checked over by your doctor.
