Springfield M1A in 308,H&K 308.Remington 700 PSS 308,Springfield M 14 308,the new sniper rifle for the military would fall into the same cat as the PSS both are bolt action with heavy BBL.all of these are match weapons still used today and still winning.Of course unlike Vietnam where we were not confined to an issued weapon for long range shooting,ie win model 70 in 30-06,rem 700 in 30-06 and 308,M 14 match with iron sights 308 and springfield 1903 in 30-06. the military now uses mostly one weapon.

google the 338 Lapua fired out of a Arnold Arms Apolla Actioned Rifle I think you will find the answer to your question and than some. quote for factual data-"The LM-105 bullet has an overall length of 54.79 mm (2.157 in) and derives its exceptional low drag from a radical LD Haack or Sears-Haack profile in the bullet's nose area. Rifles chambered for this wildcat cartridge, with a cartridge overall length of 105 mm (4.13 in), and equipped with custom made 1:7 inch progressive twist rate[13] 900 mm (35.43 in) long barrels finished first and second at several long range competitions. It’s most recent win (2007) was in an international Special Forces and police sniper competition in Switzerland against rifles chambered for .308 Winchester up to .50 BMG at ranges from 100 m – 1500 m (109 yd – 1640 yd). The LM-105 bullet exhibited its very low wind drift susceptibility notably at ranges beyond 800 m (875 yd)"-Hence making it the most accurate rifle over 1000 yards or more.

You are talking more than 1/2 a mile. Most likely the terrain would never allow a shot the far directly.

At that range as at any other, it is more the shooter than the weapon.

During the Civil War, snipers made 1000yd. shots with muzzleloaders!!

You need a reliable weapon and knowledge of ballistics for it, and LOTS OF PRACTICE!!

That would be a custom built 1000 yard rifle.

these rifles are shooting handloads that most other rifles would blow apart using. Everything is held to the tighest tollerances and everything is custom made form the rifle to the dies for that rifle.
