Charles - in my bible that passage reads
"but the wicked shall perish. The lords enemies will be like the beauty of the fields,
they will vanish - vanish like smoke"

Yes Martin but was God talking symbolically about dead bodies in Isiah? That they were in fact living people physically who were dead inside and a worm and fire consumed them symbolic of their inner torment at being seperated from Gods light inside.

As Jesus said -"Let the dead bury their own dead. He was sometimes talking about physical death and sometimes about spiritual death

Christians invented the idea of Hell. They even mistranslated words in their Bibles . Hades is the brother of Zeus or at the very most a replacement word for the Hebrew word Shoel - most certainly not Hell.

Additional:
Geenna (or Gehenna) was an earthly place used as a metaphor for the eternal destruction of evil. It comes from Hebrew and means "Gorge of Hinnom (Ge-Hinnom)." This gorge can still be visited today near Jerusalem. In the time of the Old Testament it was a place where children were sacrificed to the Ammonite god Molech (2 Kings 23:10).

Isaiah 66:24 "And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh."

Mark 9:43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It would be better for you to enter into life maimed, than to enter having two hands, to go into hell (géenna), into the fire that shall never be quenched-- 44 where 'Their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'

géenna - Hell, the place or state of the lost and condemned. Represents the Hebr. gā-Hinnom (the Valley of Tophet) and a corresponding Aramaic word. Found twelve times in the NT, eleven of which are in the Synoptic Gospels and in every instance spoken by the Lord Himself.

Edit - was God talking about people with an inner torment?

I don't think so although since I'm not God I could be wrong. The reason I don't think so is because when you look at that verse in the larger context it appears to be talking about after the judgment when there is a new Heaven and earth.

Isaiah 66:22 "For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain. 23 From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD. 24 "And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh."

It does seem to be metaphorical but whatever the picture represents it's certainly not something that one would want to aspire to unless they were a masochist or something like that.

The lake of fire that Jesus reffered to was not hell. Hell comes from the hebrew word sheol simply meaning the grave,or pit; we all go there when we die.The greek word for hell is hades which has the same meaning.
The lake of fire is an illustration to describe complete and everlasting destruction. It clearly is not to be viewed literally as death and Hades( Hell) are thrown there according to Revelation.
It is truly wicked to teach that god would burn people forever without release for the sins of a few short years. The churches misrepresented god in this way to serve their own ends.

Psa 37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

Guess again. The second death.

No, the Church created the idea of a Hell. It would scare Christians/Catholics/Blah... into going to church on a Sunday and giving over their hard earned cash.

Hell is a state of mind - it isn't a place.
