At the risk of sounding argumentative, if you teach in a public school, you shouldn't be teaching any biblical lessons. So, lets assume you teach in a Catholic or Sunday school. I'd look for something in the history books - Chronicles or Kings, etc. Perhaps the story of Sampson or David and Goliath or of Jericho. For that age group, the Veggie Tales videos are awesome; can't say enough about them. You could use one of those (such as their version of Jericho or Goliath) and then build a lesson from there.

Teach them that the Bible agrees with the Quran 100% that the Christ was not crucified and that the crucifixion, with Christiany, is an elaborate trick that was so well executed (pardon the pun) to make our World a World of suckers by ancient Romans.
And you can tell them that 12 in your class, like the 12 disciples of Jesus, is a Greek mythology thing because Christians worship the Sun on Sundays and Zeus was the Sun God and JeZeus was Zeus come down from the skies above a flat Planet Earth as his own son, and 12 represents the months of the year in the magic of Zeus the weather God.
Good luck teach!
Peace

How about the Good Samaritan? It's a nice, compact story with no loose ends. Most Bible stories really don't have simple messages, or aren't entirely child-friendly.
Make sure they understand about how despised Samaritans were. (You could make the priest and the Levite a pastor and a seminarian and the Samaritan a Hare Krishna devotee.)
Jonah's good too. Tell the WHOLE story, not just the whale part.

How about David and Goliath? You could make the lesson fun and easier for the younger ones and go into more details for the older students, like what army was Goliath fighting for? Who was king of Israel then? How tall was Goliath? You can find the story in 1 Samuel 17:)

Maybe you just leave the spiritual thing to the parents. We don't know their preference when it comes to faith. Assuming you know all of them. It would be wiser to know the academic weak points of your students and deal it accordingly. You will receive a pat on the back from the parents saying , "Job well done"...

I love 'the sermon on the mount'. If you could explain it to the kids where they will understand it, I think it would be a great lesson for them.
Good Luck

teach them Genesis. teach them how God made the beginning; He made the heavens and the earth. it may seem kinda like a silly idea but later in life they'll be taught evolution and how the earth made itself and that it came from the big bang (which is not true). it is vital that they know that God made everything.
