There are suits I've seen at the large SCA events (Society for Creative Anachronism) that look great. But you CAN make it yourself without any metals or bamboo by using Kydex plastic. Several SCA armorers are using that to make horse armor now.

Kydex comes in big sheets (they can cut it for you) that come in different thicknesses. I get a 10x5' sheet for $60 every two years from the plastics manufacturing plant in our city - they have a customer store for walk in orders - and use a scissors to cut mine. It comes thicker and you can use a jig saw on it. The good thing about this is that it can be drilled, sanded, painted, etc. and heat shaped into a form (as they do with the face plates for the horses). It has a 'memory' to it so you can bend it and it snaps back without cracking, bending permanently or breaking.

You've probably seen this stuff. It's what they put on the walls of hospitals so the gurneys bumping into the walls won't scuff anything. Disneyland puts it on the sides of all their food kiosks. It's great to play with, actually not all that expensive, and you can buy the amount you think you need, the places cut it into smaller sections and charge the price based on that.

You can use those hard platic pickle barrels to make Kendo chest protectors. The SCA (society for creative anachronism) use pickle barrels and carpets to create various suits of armor for their realistic and painful battles.

If all you need is protection from a shinai, street hockey pads and a fencing mask will get the job done. Try a used sporting goods store for the pads....nobody plays street hockey more than once!

I'm kidding, but you do find a lot of used street hockey equipment used, so it'll be cheaper than buying new.

Every place I've visited requires you to purchase your own armor after about 6 months if you haven't already. It's about the same for the olympic fencing clubs to which I belong.
