But if someone leaves America and goes to a Chinese town, don't they say "It's like I'm on a different planet"?
I think Cain stayed on earth, but just went to somewhere far away...

No, then word eretz translates as land. When a hey is put before it (Ha-aretz) it usually refers specifically to Israel.
The word for earth would be olam, although that can also mean eternity or the entire universe. It is also used sometimes to refer to spiritual levels.
