At the moment much of the onus when it comes to recycling is placed on the consumer and there's not much in the way of incentives for them to recycle.

It costs less to recycle than it does to manufacture glass, plastic, metal products etc from raw materials so the manufacturers are already saving money but rarely passing the benefits on to the consumers.

It would be good to reintroduce 'money back' schemes. When I was a kid schools, churches, youth groups etc used to collect paper, bottles, cans etc and raise money that way and everyone benefitted.

Perhaps it's time to reintroduce the scheme. But, as always, big corporations, supermarkets, governments etc only react when they think their profit or position is at risk so it would be necessary to use 'consumer power' to make them change their position. If lots of people put pressure on them then we may see some positive action.

I like the money back theme Trevor describes. We had the same here in Canada when I was growing up.
But does the extra weight of glass, metal, etc. being hauled back and forth take away from the advantages? I've no answer to that.
